TRENTHAM HORSES

ACCOMPLICE IMPROVING

[By CARBINE.] Among Trentham horses with early engagements one who is working well is Roaming, who ran a clinking seven In lmin 31sec on Tuesday. Roaming won two races at the Manawatu Christmas meeting and was a .place filler at Trentham last month. His next appearance is to be at Carterton next week-end. Galteemore has resumed training at Trentham, and may reappear at Carterton next week.

An improving hack is Accomplice. On Tuesday he easily accounted for Cricket over seven furlongs in lmin 32sec. Accomplice sticks on fairly well and should win races.

MAY RACE WELL

AMONG TWO-YEAR-OLDS

[By CARBINE.] A two-year-old who will create interest at the Napier Park meeting is Lady Furst. Already Lady Furst has shown herself to be a good galloper, and she has won one of the two races she has contested. As she has improved since she appeared in public at New Year she is expected by some who have been watching her track work to give an excellent account of herself this week.

TURF GOSSIP

Reminder Nominations for the Oamaru Jockey Club's autumn meeting will close at 8 p.m. to-morrow. An Attractive Card The Banks Peninsula Racing Club has received an excellent list of acceptances for its summer meeting to be held on the picturesque Motukarara racecourse on Saturday. The only defections from the Peninsula Cup were Dictate, Ponty. Linguist, and Double Gift, and of these Dictate, Linguist, and Double Gift are acceptors in the Kinloch Handicap. Both races have closed with the best fields attracted to Motukarara for many years past. All other events have filled well, and unless one horse drops o.:t of the Motukarara Juvenile Stakes, two divisions will have to be provided for. Riding- en Saturday Some riding engagements made for Saturday's programme at Motukarara are as follows: —J. Jennings. Sovereign Lady, Linguist; A. C. Messervy, Great Memory, Dracula, Gay Parade: J. Murfitt, Drinkup; L. J. Ellis, Studley Royal, Nolana. Kindly: M. Caddy, Roy Bun. Glenogil. Glenacre; G. Linton, Clubman; A. Stove, Grampian; R. Beale, Elmarch. Jumpers in Action Hossack and Conception were schooled over four brush hurdles at Riccarton yesterday, both shaping very pleasingly, The former, who is by Royal Mac, is only a novice at the game, and is the makings of a useful performer. Flemington Winner Elanage, winner of the King's Plate at Flemington on Tuesday, is a halfbrother by Posterity to the Ringmaster colt purchased by Mr E. Hay at Trentham in January, and now in the hands of T. H. Gillett, at Riccarton. At Westport The programme for the Westport Jockey Club's meeting on April 9 and

11 is a most attractive one. Stakes for the two days amount to £I4OO, and in addition a silver cup, valued at £25, and three gold-mounted whips will be given as trophies. The cup, which is on display at Trist and Small's, in Christchurch. will be given to the winner of the Westport Handicap on the second day, and the rider of the winner will receive a gold-mounted whip presented by Mr H. E. Shiel, of Dunedin. Nominations for all events will close on March 22.

Change of Rider The successful combination of Silver Ring and A. E. Ellis was probably severed at Hokitika last week-end. Ellis rode him in the principal event on the first day, and the gelding's performance appeared to be satisfactory to all concerned, but on Sunday Ellis was told by the owner that he would not be required for Silver Ring on Monday. Silver Ring claimed a 71b allowance on Mpndav, and was sent out favourite, but failed to make the expected improvement. This was not surprising, as the track was much heavier than on the first day, and he had the heavy load of 10-7 to carry. He will have track conditions more to his liking at Motukarara. and with only 9-9 to carry he can be depended upon to offer trouble to his more seasoned opponents. In all probability, G. Ridgway will ride him on Saturday. Up to Old Tricks Royal Limond, who has been in Mrs A. W. McDonald's stable for several weeks in the hope that a change of environment would induce him to work and race more generously, commenced schooling last week, says a northern writer.

He cleared the first obstacle well, but soon gave evidence that he has not mended his ways when he ran off at the second. Taken back and put on the inside of his schooling companion, he had no option the second time but to jump it.

There are good races in Royal Limond still if he can be persuaded to do his best, but he is an old and obviously cunning campaigner who probably will please himself what he does just as he did when D. O'Connor trained him.

A Remarkable Career James Scobie, trainer of Hua, will be 78 years of age next July, and has been in the racing business for 67 years. He has a wonderful record in classic races in Australia, but strangely enough he has won the Victorian St. Leger only thrice, and each time with a horse owned by Mr E. E. D. Clarke —Wolowa 1913, Trivalve 1928, and Hua 1938 For this patron Scobie has won stakes approaching the £150,000 mark. A Favourite Race The Ellerslie trainer R. S. Bagby has an excellent record in the Herries Memorial Cup, which he won with Strelto on Saturday. He had previously trained the winner twice, scoring with Master Brierly in 1934 and in 1937, and he also rode In the Shade to victory in 1931. Bagby's record is one of which he may be justifiably proud, as the Herries Memorial Cup is one of the leading handicap races in the Dominion. The condition in which Stretto was turned out for ner first race over a middle distance on Saturday reflected much credit on Bagby, who had considerable trouble with her before getting her back to form. Not Insured The Woodville Jockey Club experienced a dead loss of several hundreds of pounds over the meeting recently abandoned. The club is now considering suitable dates for holding a meeting later on in the season. World's Richest Race Seabiscuit. owned by Mr Charles S. Howard, and the biggest money-win-(•er in America last year with £33,716, is topweight, 9-4, in the £20,000 Santa Anita Handicap, which is to be run tt Los Angeles on Saturday. War Admiral, America's outstanding three-year-old, and winner of the Kentucky Derby, is next with 9-3, one pound over last year's handicap winner, Rosemont. » In 15 starts last year, Seabiscuit won 11 races, and was only once unplaced. War Admiral was undefeated in eight starts, and won £33,300. Rosemont failed to get a place in two starts after winning the Santa Anita last year. TROTTING NOTES

Reminders Entries of present yearlings for the New Zealand Champion Stakes, 1939, and the New Zealand Sapling 8 Stakes, 1939, will close with the secretary of the Ashburton Trotting Club at 5 p.m. to-day. _ m _ . Acceptances for the Timaru Trotting Club's meeting will close at 9 p.m. on Tuesday. Nominations of present yearlings for the New Brighton Challenge Stakes, 1939, will close at 5 p.m. on March 17. Nominations for the Cheviot meeting, to be held on March 19. will close to-day at 9 p.m. At Hutt Park At the Wellington Trotting Club's meeting on Saturday, much interest will be centred in horses engaged m the Autumn Novice and Taita Stakes, and while the majority have yet to win a race the back-markers will have their work cut out to beat the maidens. Included is a good three-year-old in Axminster, hailing from the strong F. J. Smith stable. He will probably be the favourite, and his racing experience will stand him in good stead. Sans Pareil has had a number of races to fit him for the ordeal, and Relax is also an experienced pacer. Fenella, who will be making her first appearance with the colours up, is a five-year-old mare by Wellington Direct from a Four Chimes mare, and, trained by R. B. Berry, will race in the nomination of Mr W. T. Lowe. Mongolian is a four-year-old gelding by Grattan Loyal from Wild Pointer, and is trained by F. G. Holmes at Addington. In his track efforts this young pacer has displayed nervousness which only racing amongst others may cure. Like others of the Grattan Loyal breed, he may need time before showing his best, but he is a good type and possesses speed above the average. Of the remainder, Sewana looks most likely to fill a place. This is a six-year-old chestnut gelding by Rey de Oro —Gold Queen, and a full-brother to Roi l'Or, and while he is still a bit temperamental, he has the speed of a good racehorse. The slow class races at Hutt Park on Saturday may not be the least interesting, but possibly Axminster, Sewana, and Fenella may attract the notice of the speculating public. Brilliant Sprinters Frisco Boy, King's Play, Ner vie's Last, and Bonny Azure are all aspir-

I ants for inter-Dominion championship honours, and will be given a chance in the Farewell Handicap at Wellington to justify their claims for such a distinctive honour. They do not overshadow the rest of the field, which includes a number of very smart sprinters whose owners are not so ambitious as some others that could be mentioned. Frisco Boy will carry the public's support, and as he is owned by the president of the Wellington Trotting Club, sentiment in the betting may play a part. The race is not an easy one to win, and South Island owners have a wholesome respect for any horse paraded by F. J. Smith, especially one of the class of Nervie's Last, who, from 24 yards behind, may be equal to the task. King's Play, too, is a North Island trained pacer with a rare chance, and he is already one of the early selections for at least one race in the championships. Lady Fame will add still further to the strength of the North Island representation, and M. C. McTigue, trainer of Morello, does not usually travel afar without a prospect of success. Agile has been working well, and once in front he takes a lot of beating. He is one who might upset calculations in what promises to be a very interesting race. At present preference must be given to King's Play, Nervie's Last, .and Frisco Boy. A Totalisator Advocate Among the recent visitors to Elphin was Mr G. J. Barton, one of the leading owners in New Zealand, says the L2unceston "Examiner," He has the champion Indianapolis and has raced many high-class pacers in the Dominion. He stated that he always has a team of 12 or 14 pacers in work. Mr Barton is a great advocate o'f the totalisator alone for racing, and he stated there was so much satisfaction among owners in New Zealand that only the machine was relied upon. With the totalisator the stakes were so good that owners did not have to worry about betting, and such things as horses not trying to win or running for any other purpose than to secure the stake were almost unknown in the Dominion. Defection of Wrinkle Unfortunately for the owner, W. J. Messenger, the state, and Australia, the champion, Wrinkle, will not be able to visit New Zealand to compete in the championships, says the Australian Trotting "Record." Wrinkle has done a lot of racing since a young horse, but was perfectly sound. Comment has often been passed on the clean appearance of his legs, which

were particularly free from considering his great track caree? After his last race he was lame, iS improved during the week. Howeve? it was found that the suspensory ]i|S[ ment in a front leg had been strameT Major Speed will now be themC South Australian representative.
