OFFICIAL FORECASTS

WELLINGTON, March 1

The weather forecast for Canterbury and Marlborough, issued at 5 p.m. by the Meteorological Office, Wellington, and dealing with the 24 hours following the time of issue, is as follows:

Moderate but freshening northerly to north-westerly winds. Weather fine and warm. Seas slight to moderate, but rising 'north of Kaikoura. WEST COAST The forecast for the west coast of the South Island is:— Light to moderate but freshening west to north-westerly winds. Weather fair to fine at first, but cloud increasing and rain developing during Wednesday, more especially in South Westland. Temperatures warm. DOMINION The Dominion forecast is:— Weather for the most part fair to fine, but cloud gradually increas-.. ing in the western districts from Taranaki southwards, and rain developing in South Westland and the far south. Temperatures again rising, especially in eastern areas. An anti-cyclone of moderate intensity now extends across the North Tasman Sea on to New Zealand. A fresh series of shallow westerly depressions is, however, developing over southern Australia and the South Tasman. Winds Northerly predominating over the South Island, and southwesterly or southerly in the North, but north-westerlies soon again setting in generally about and south of Cook Strait; force light to moderate mainly at first, but strong in the far south, and later freshening south of New Plymouth and Castlepoint.

Seas (New Zealand waters) —Becoming rough soon in Foveaitx Strait; elsewhere slight to moderate, but later rising also about Cook Strait. Eastern Tasman Sea—Light to moderate southerly winds, later becoming variable in the northern portions, with slight to moderate seas. Moderate but freshening north-westerly winds and rising seas in the southern portion. CHRISTCHURCH WEATHER The weather was tine and warm in Christchurch yesterday. The morning was overcast with a light northeasterly wind. In the afternoon there was a strong north-easterly wind and brilliant sunshine. The maximum temperature was 70.1 degrees. At 1 o’clock this morning the sky was clear and a strong wind was blowing from the east.. The temperature was 63 degrees and the barometer was steady at 30.025 inches.

IN OTHER PLACES Auckland—There was ideal summer Weather, with clear skies and a moderate southerly wind. The maximum temperature was 78 degrees. The barometer Was steady, the 5 p.m. reading being SO.OOin. Wellington—The weather was overcast early, but gradually cleared and the afternoon was brilliantly fine. A light south, wind blew. The minimum temperature on Monday night Was 60 7 and the maximum yesterday 69.0 degrees. At 3.30 p.m. the barometer registered 30.03 in. Dunedin —There was bright sunshine yesterday and warm temperatures, with a gusty wind from the north-east. The barometer rose to 30.03 in. but fell again in the afternoon.
