NOTES ON THE RACING >

[THE PRESS Special Service.]

INVERCARGILL, February 25, Always Hajidy

Poniard was never further back than fourth in the Gore High' weight Handicap, and he won by staying, on. Coat of Arms and Pink Del soon sorted themselves out In the lead, and they opened up a gap of three lengths in the middle stages from Poniard and Last Post. This was the order at the end of six furlongs, and then Last Post dropped back and Poniard moved up to the leaders. Coat of Arms broke down at the top of the straight, and Poniard came through to win from The Surgeon, who finished well to beat Pink Del. Delrain was a fair fourth, after being well back for over six furlongs. The Surgeon, was doing his best work oyer the concluding stages, but he had bo chance with the winner. An Easy Victory

.Valmarch led all the way in the Longford Hack Handicap, and romped away from the others in the straight. The race tos spoilt by a bad start, and Spanish tad, Mona's Song, and Combat were the Worst sufferers. Valmarch was followed out by Ballad, Western Song, Gipsy Fair, and Verdure. There was little change at the end of three furlongs, and then Aspire and Peony Rose made forward moves. Valmarch led into the straight two lengths clear of Western Song, who headed a bunched lot, Including Ballad, Gipsy Fair, Peony' Rose, and Aspire. Once in the straight Valmarch drew right away, and had the finish to himself. There was a good race for second money, and Peony JJose beat the fast-finishing Mona's Song. Western Song was close up fourth, and then came Ballad and Nightwings, who also suffered interference at the start. The unlucky horse was Mona's Song, but hone had a chance with the ..winner, who Uways had something in reserve. A Close Tussle Glen Elad was one of the leaders over the last mile in the Electric Trot, and Prevailed in an exciting finish. More than half the field broke up at the start, and Provincial led out from Dora Lindsay, Sun Gauge, and Glen Elad. The lastnamed joined Provincial in the lead at Jhe end of half a mile, and they had a lead of four lengths along the back from Sun Gauge and Kentucky Sun. Provincial and Glen Elad continued to dispute we lead across the top, where Sun Gauge and Kentucky Sun closed on the leaders, the others being well out of the picture. Provincial was beaten at the home turn, and Glen Elad stayed on under hard driving to beat Kentucky Sun by a head. Sun Gauge was close up next, in front of Provincial. Support Justified Galleon was backed down to a short odds-on price in the Racing Club Handicap, and he justified the confidence shown jn him, but he had a close call, and had ™ break a track record to beat Pink Robe by a head. Pink Robe was slow , aw ay, but she ran to the front at the *nd of two furlongs from Daring Deed, who-was a similar distance in front of Grand Finale. At the five furlongs post ■ ! HHt Robe was five lengths clear of Grand Wfte, who was just shading Galleon. {he last-named closed on Pink Robe at <«e home turn, and was in charge as Won as they straightened up. Galleon J«en looked all over a winner, but he had J" be ridden out to stall off Pink Robe, J*ho came again, and would probably nave won in a couple more strides. Island «nnet was four lengths away, and Daring was a poor fourth. There was a ' ot of merit in Galleon's success, as he *as giving away a big start half-way wough the race, and the last mile was ; qUI In lmin 39 l-ssec. Novice Handicap Poxlove won the Novice Handicap prac■ggally from end to end- and won going

away. Guste. Dolita, and Ardmayle got away badly in a bad start, and Free Service led out from Astaire, Foxlove, and Silver Choir. With a furlong covered Foxlove ran to the front, and was displaced in the next furlong by Silver Choir, and Guste improved his position Silver Choir was in charge across the top. and led into the straight from Astaire. Gay Vixen, and Signorina. Silver Choir compounded at tho distance, :tnd Foxlove came away t" beat Astaire comfr" t-blv Gay Vixen was a good third, and Wyn was next, fol'owed by Silver Choir and Ardmayle. This was the winner's third race, and he showed promising form at Winton. He is a four-year-old black gelding by Gallant Fox from the Archery mare Cupid's Dart. Favourites Beaten Janet Gaynor and Rodeur were equal favourites on the win machine for the Croydon Handicap, but the former finished a bad last and Rodeur was beaten by the second outsider. Beam, by a nose. Irish Birdcatcher. Rodeur, Viking, and Janet Gaynor began best, and at the end of a furlong Viking was in charge from Janet Gaynor, Irish Birdcatcher, and Rodeur. There was no change at the end of three furlongs, and then Janet Gaynor lost her position and Beam moved up from last into second place. Viking was first into the straight from Beam, Irish Birdcatcher, and Rodeur, and in a good finish Beam lasted long enough to beat Rodeur by a nose Viking was a leneth away third, and he just headed Irish Birdcatcher, who was six lengths clear of Janet Gaynor and Moneyless. Rodeur was badly ridden and should never have been beaten. Janet Gaynor was under the whip at the top of the straight but could not make any headway. Another Good Finish Grattanella was one of the leaders all the way in the Progressive Trot, and he prevailed in a close finish. Edith Grattan and Grattanella had turns as pacemakers for a mile and a quarter, and their neatest attendants were Sydney Grand and Bonnie Brydone. With three furlongs to go Happy Locanda moved into fifth place, and the order into the stiaigh't was Grattanella, Edith Grattan, Sydney Grand. Bonnie Brydone, and Happy Locanda. Edith Grattan was beaten at the top of the straight, and Grattanella stayed on under pressure to beat Sydney Grand. Bonnie Brydone was a nose away third, and should have done better. Edith Grattan was close up fourth, and Capricorn and Gay Avon were next. Never in Doubt

Sailing Lady ran to the front at tt.e end of two furlongs in the Summer Hack Handicap, and finished up an easy winner in fast time. Lochie River was slow away, and Coxcomb took up the running irom Roy Bun and Sailing Lady. The lastnamed was in charge at six furlongs, pnd drew away along the back I'rom Coxcomb, Roy Bun, and Lochie River, who were racing together. Coxcomb lost ground at the far turn. Sailing Lady was two lengths clear across the top from Roy Bun, who was being hard ridden to hold his position. Sailing Lady held her lead into the straight, and drew away to win from Coxcomb, who beat Roy Bun comfortably. Lochie River was a bad fourth.

At Flemington To-day Most important of the autumn fixtures in Victoria is the Victoria Racing Club's autumn meeting at Flemington, and this year's fixture will be opened to-day, when the six events to be decided include the Newmarket Handicap, the Sires' Produce Stakes, and the St. Leger Stakes. Outside of Melbourne Cup Day, and possibly Derby Day. Newmarket Day is the big day of the year at Flemington. The Newmarket Handicap is the principal six-furlong event of the year in the whole of the Commonwealth. This year's contest is the sixty-fifth since the race was inaugurated, and it carries a stake of £3OOO. It i§ decided over a perfectly straight course. With large fields the rule it is an exceedingly difficult race to follow. The record-sized field was 38 in 1925, but the 30 mark has often been exceeded. Two years ago there were 30 starters, but last year there were only 16 starters, and there were 17 final acceptors for this year's race. Ajax's Prospects The favourite for to-day's Newmarket from the date of nominations has been the three-year-old Ajax. who has been weighted at 9-0, or 71b above weight-for-age. The success of the Heroic colt in the Futurity Stakes last Saturday under 9-6 will have served only to make his post firmer than ever before, particularly as no rehandicap can be imposed for his Futurity win. Aja had never galloped more brilliantly than he was doing the week before the Futurity, so that, like Hua, whom he outsprinted in the Futurity, he has clearly come up an even better colt for the autumn than he was in the spring.

In Appreciation The Australian trainer, J. O'Shea, has forwarded to Mr E. G. Bridgens, president of the Auckland Trotting Club, a cheque for £lO 10s to be given, on his behalf, to some Auckland charitable institution as a mark of his appreciation of the many kindnesses shown when in Auckland recently with Lawn Derby. O'Shea also mentioned that the great reception given him when i" horse won the President's Handicap had caused a definite decision to visit Auckland, again for a trotting meeting, _____
