AUCKLAND, February 25,
Trapped in a car when it went oVer the end of the Devonport vehicular ferry wharf early this afternoon, Mrs Rebecca King, of Warkworth, was rescued in a sensational manner. Frederick Gardener, aged about 35, of Whangarei, who was seated in a car two further back in the queue, ran forward and dived into the harbour fully clothed. Mrs King, who had been submerged for several seconds, rose to the surface and got out of the car through the open door as Gardener reached her and swam with her to the wharf, holding on to a pile for several minutes before being rescued by Mr R. Mowat's speed-boat. Mrs King was examined by a doctor and seat to a private hospital. She, had a slight cut below the throat and was suffering badly from shock, but is progressing satisfactorily. It is understood that Mrs King's car would not start. As the cars were moving forward to go on the ferry boat Mr King alighted to push the car, leaving his wife at the wheel. The engine suddenly accelerated and the car went over the wharf.
