FIRST POTATOES IN FRANCE
Celebrations have just been held In France in commemoration of the two hundredth anniversary of the birth at Montdidier of Antoine Parmentier, who introduced _ the potato into France in the eighteenth century. In all the ceremonies the potato was given a place of honour. At Neuilly, a suburb of Paris, where Parmentier had his first potato patch, his etatue was covered with flowers,
and there was a feast of fried potatoes in his honour. Parmentier cultivated potatoes at a time when food was scarce, but popular ideas were strong against the new vegetable. It was alleged that potatoes caused cholera. Parmentier had recourse to a trick. He had his plantation of potatoes guarded by soldiers, but he saw to it-they were very few in number, so that soon there was pilfering, and stolen potatoes, like stolen fruit, tasted sweet Louis XVI, to help make potatoes popular, used to go about wearing a sprig of potato leaves in his buttonhole.
