WEDDINGS

POPE—WHITE Gladioli, hydrangeas, and carnations in soft pastel shades decorated the Church of St. Francis, Cambridge terrace. for the wedding of Sylvia Mary, younger daughter of Mr and Mrs W. A. White (Christchurch), to John Lawrence Benson, only son of the late Mr and Mrs D. B. Pope. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. T. E. Brown, and Mr D. J. Stallard was organist. . ~ , ~ Escorted by her father, the bride wore a frock of ivory crinkle ninon, the Grecian bodice being finished at the low-cut neckline with two large French silk flowers. The full skirt fell from the high waistline in soft folds, forming a short train. Her ivory tulle veil was held to the head with. one large flower matching those on her frock, and she carried a white prayerbook. , Miss M. D. Larcombe, the only bridesmaid, wore a frock of turquoise lacquered taffeta, cut with a low neckline. the sleeves pleated in at the shoulders, and a full flared skirt. Cyclamen and purple-shaded flowers at her waist and in her hair provided an effective contrast.

The bridegroom was attended by Mr S. H. Barnett as best man.

Mrs W. A. White received the guests in the Mayfair lounge. She was wearing a smart ensemble of navy satin-backed crepe and a large navy hat.

For travelling, the bride wore a navy tailored frock and a bolero edged with bright coloured flowerets of felt. Her hat was of navy felt. Mr and Mrs John L. B. Pope will live in Christchurch.

GRUBB—ROBERTS At St. Paul’s Church, Glenmark, the wedding was celebrated recently of Leila Margaret, elder daughter of Mr and Mrs T. E. L. Roberts (“Taiamea,” Scargill, North Canterbury)', to Angus Ernest, youngest son of the late Mr John C. Grubb and of Mrs Grubb (Wanganui). The ceremony was performed by . the Rev. Mr Hawkins and Mrs Hawkins was the organist. Mr T. E. L. Roberts escorted his daughter, who was attended by Mrs R. J. Sloss as matron of honour. Mr B. Keane attended the bridegroc i. The bride wore a russet frock of heavy delustred satin, self-patterned with leaves of satin. The frock was slim-fitting and had elbow-length sleeves of frills and a belt finished with gold shell buckles. A gold clasp showed at the neckline in front. Her hat of matching baku straw was trimmed with feathers to tone, and she carried a Sheaf of gladioli, begonias, and carnations in autumn tonings. The matron of honour wore an ensemble of royal blue crepon, the plain pleated skirt being worn with a blue and white floral blouse and a bolero jacket. Her hat of royal blue baku straw was trimmed with a patent ribbon bow and white flowers, and she carried a bouquet .of cream carnations, gladioli, and roses. , When receiving hdr guests at the Winter Garden, Mrs T. E. L. Roberts was wearing an ensemble in brown tonings, the elbdw-length sleeves and neckline showing fawn embroideries. Her hat of matching straw was trimmed with a posy of flowers, and she carried gold and orange abutilons, carnations, and roses. ~ , „ When Mr and Mrs A. E. Grubb left for their wedding tour, the bride was wearing a mustard-yellow silk suit, and a halo hat trimmed with a brown bow.

FALKNER—JACOBS At St; Francis’s Church, Mangamaunu, Kaikoura, the wedding took place recently of Lydia, eldest daughter of Mr end Mrs J. • Jacobs ana grand-daughter of Mrs Henry Martin, to Mr William Falkner. The Rev. Father Devlin officiated. ■ ' ■ The bride, who was given away by her father, wore an ankle-length frock of floral crepe; de chine, with beige georgette trimmings, and a . hat of white Bangkok straw. She carried a bouquet of .pink, roses and carnations tied with white satin .ribbon, . ■ . Miss Meddy Jacobs attended her sister as bridesmaid, wearing a frock of pale blue silk marqcain trimmed' with fsilver, and a white straw hat She carried pink roses. • , -■ Mr J. Jacobs, jun., attended the bridegroom as best man. - After the ceremony a reception was held in the Hapuku Hall. Mrs Jacobs received her guests, wearing a figured frock of deep plumcoloured marocain relieved 'with fawn, and a small black hat finished with scarlet flowers and a black feather mount. Her bouquet was of roses and carnations. Mrs H. Martin, the bride’s grandmother, wore a 1 ack.and red silk frock, a black swagger coat, and a black hat relieved with red.. STRONG—JUDKINS At St. David’s Anglican Church the marriage was celebrated recently of Freda Cicely, second daughter of Mr and Mrs F. A. Judkins (Beckenham), to Leslie Andrews, son of Mr and Mrs F. G. Strong. Linwood. The Rev. Basil Taylor performed the ceremony, Mr Claydon was organist, and a solo was sung by Miss Edna Henderson. The bride was ..escorted by her father. She wore ah empire frock of magnolia satin, trimmed with satin buttons from the neck to the hem. The high neckline was softened< with a pointed lace collar fastened with a miali spray of orange blossom, and the full sleeves were drawn into deep lace cuffs at the elbows. Ike long oval train formed by the skirt j showed beneath her veil of embroidered tulle, the head-dress being a halo, of orange blossom and pleated tulle. She carried a trailing bouquet of cream gladioli, lilies, and carnations. Two bridesmaids. Mis? Ethel Judkins, the bride’s sister, and. Miss Beryl Emmett wore frocks of , Jubilee-blue linen lace made on fitting lines and finished at the waistlines with deeper flowers to tone- The long bell sleeves were trimmed ■ with- grey fur. They wore halo hats with matching eyeveils. and carried bouquets of pink gladioli, carnations, and sweet peas. Mr Jack Strong attended the bridegroom as best man,, Mr . D. Chinn (Westland) was groomsman, and Messrs R. McCleary and V. Strong acted as ushers, . As the bridal party left the church Master Brian Strong, nephew of the bridegroom, presented the bride with a lucky horseshoe. __ A reception, was held: at-the- Mayfair Lounge, where the guests were received, by the bride’s, mother, assisted, by' the bridegroom’s mother. Mrs Judkins wore a navy tailored suit, a beige 'georgette blouse, and a navy straw hat.. She carried a bouquet of autumn tints. Mrs Strongs, navy floral frock was relieved with white, and with it she wore a nhvy coat and a hat to match. Her bouquet was of cardinal-shaded flowers.The bride travelled in a navy suit, a cream satin blouse; and a navy Breton straw hat, with accessories to match. ■ ■ • Mr and Mrs L. A. Strong will live at PapanuL. WOMEN’S TEMPERANCE UNION Mrs J. K. Archer presided, at the monthly, meeting, of the branch of the Women s Christian Ternperance Union. Devotions were, conducted by Mrs Davie*. Arrangements were made lor the garden party organised by the district executive of the union, to be held in the middle of February in the grduhds of Mrs A. S. Adams’s home; Fendalton. It was agreed to hold the anniversary social on February 28, all members of sister branches to .be invited. ; Items were given by Mrs Reeve (solo) and Mrs Woodcock (recitation).
