The Shanghai correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph” says the Japanese may seize Chinese property worth millions of pounds if the decision announced by a Japanese Embassy spokesman is fully carried out. The spokesman disclosed the seizure of the residence of General Wu Teh Chen, Governor of Shantung, and a former Mayor of Shanghai. The spokesman added that the authorities intended to seize the property of all Chinese engaged in anti-Japanese activities, regardless of its location. The question whether the property of taxpayers within the settlement should be protected instantly arises. The decision is believed to be connected with Japan’s determination to secure reparations from China by all possible means.
