UNLOADING OF SHIP IN DISPUTE
♦ RIVAL CLAIMS OF SEAMEN AND WATERSIDERS (press association telegram.) GISBORNE, February 4. The first case in which a ruling of the Arbitration Court is required about the employment of seamen working cargo on vessels under 275 tons,'arose at Gisborne to-day in respect of the coastal vessel Awahou, when seamen, acting under instructions from national headquarters, asked that they be employed in discharging 200 tons of cargo. The Waterside Union maintained that the ship did not come under the ruling, as it was not the past custom to employ seamen in working cargo. The watersiders, nevertheless, agreed to provide a gang for wharf work only. The seamen were apparently instructed by the union only to man the winches. The ship is now held up for lack of labour to work the cargo in the holds. The matter has been referred to the Seamen’s Union headquarters for further instructions about working the cargo tn the holds.
