HONEY SEASON
♦ HEAVY RAIN BENEFITS PRODUCERS CROP AGAIN OF HIGHEST STANDARD The present honey season has been a good one, said Mr W. J. Fix, apiary instructor for the Canterbury Province. yesterday. The heavy rain during December had given the clover a longer flowering period, which had resulted in good crops being taken on both light and heavy country. Apiarists are now busy extracting honey, and from samples it is evident that the honey in Canterbury this year is again of the very highest standard, and as conditions throughout the province have been favourable to all producers it is anticipated that apiarists will have a successful season.
It was difficult at present to say what quantity would be available for export this season, said Mr Fix, as this would depend on the demand in other parts of New Zealand. The honey produced in Canterbury was of excellent quality, and found a good market in other districts. There hqs been an increasing demand for honey throughout New Zealand. and it is now being used by many as a sweetening agent in place of sugar. Heney producers did not enjoy a very successful season last year, except those working on the lighter types of soil, and the present good season will therefore be very welcome to them.
