FRIENDLY BLACK BEAR.—In Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, where this photograph was taken, the black bear roams wild and is a constant attraction to tourists. A bear of this species recently attacked a keeper at the Auckland Zoo, but incidents of this kind are most unusual.
GIFTS TO THE CITIZENS OF AUCKLAND. —The historic Lion Rock at Piha, a well-known beach resort about 30 miles from Auckland on the west coast, which has been presented to the city by the family of Professor Sir Algernon Thomas, whose death occurred recently. One hundred acres of native bush at Piha have also been given. The gifts were ma e a e express wish of Sir Algernon Thomas, whose portrait is inset.
