TO THE EDITOR OP THE PRESS. Sir _ln reply to Mr A. H. Smart, he can be assured that the seed of Californian thistle will germinate and grow readily without having previously passed through the digestive system of a bird. In some cases seeds of plants which have passed through a bird will germinate more .rapidly than if sown directly in the ground. It is possible that this is so in the case of Californian ' thistle. It is not generally known that in the case of this thistle, male and female flowers arc found on separate plants. Only female plants can set seed. — Yours, etc., L. W. McCASKILL. February 4, 1938,
