MORTGAGE INVESTMENT

TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. Sir, —Your correspondent signing herself "Downhearted” in this morning’s issue, must realise, as do thousands, that the real primary industry in New Zealand is borrowing money and sticking to it. This has proved so successful that a second one has sprung up, that of borrowing houses and sticking to them. This new game of beggar my neighbour, started by the late Government and improved on by the present one, has caught on and it is hard to say where it will stop.— Yours, etc., A FELLOW SUFFERER. February 3, 1938.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS

Sir, —May I support your correspondent, “Downhearted,” in “The Press” this morning. She has my sincere sympathy. I also have a sum of money “lent,” which should support me with ease, but I have not had half the interest even, for some time. I call this robbery, especially as the mortgagor does not lack much in the way of luxury. Why is this allowed? When people are sent to prison for stealing articles from shops, etc., nothing is done to help widows who depend on their interest to pay for their keep. I have heard it said “the law is a hass”; it seems true. Nothing seems to be done to those who are robbing poor women of their money; they are protected by a kind Government, and being encouraged in their dishonesty. It is a pity some of our members of Parliament caijnot do something to put a stop to this dishonesty (to put it mildly) and so help us poor widows.—Yours, etc., THREE SCORE & TEN. Fehmarv 4 1938.
