♦ Answers on Illustrations Page. (1) An event took place this week in Europe and was reported in a cable message which not only gave thd’ date when it occurred but also the exact hour (Greenwich mean time). What was the event? (2) If someone were to use the word orrery in conversation you would immediately think of— A place where fashionable weddings are held in London; an early type of sextant of the kind used by Drake in his voyage round the world; a model for showing the movements of the heavenly bodies; a place for breeding and growing oysters. How did the word arise? You will probably know this if you know its meaning. (3) Now that you have probably received your income tax demand it may give you some pleasure to think of somewhere where you could live without having to pay any income tax. Where is it? It is not very far from England.
(4) Blast, halo blight, grease spot, and canker were stated by a well-known scientist during the week to have been causing concern. What is it all about? Who expressed concern about these things and what do they affect?
(5) Discontent with Nazi rule in Germany was reported during the week. An action by the Minister for War (Marshal von Blomberg) was stated to be the crystallising point in a wider dissatisfaction. What was this action? Expression of sympathy with the Jews; getting drunk at a State dinner; marrying his secretary; disclosure of military secrets; appropriating army funds for his own use.
(6) A new treatment for insanity was reported to have had considerable success in Canada during the week. It was one of the following:— Sunbathing; listening to crooners over the radio; the use of an insulin serum; attending Parliamentary debates; injections of salicylic acid.
