WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

MOUNT PLEASANT The January meeting of the Mount Pleasant Women's Institute was held at the home of Mrs H. Worrall, with Mrs A. Mprten presiding. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs M. Lawry. A visitor from Dunedin, Mrs Weir, was welcomed. During the social hour, holiday snapshots were shown by members. There was a fine display of hill-grown geraniums and pelargoniums. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Worrall, Congreve, Roche, Gale, and Waltpn. A vote of thanks was passed to Mrs Worrall for the use of her home. BURNHAM At .the first meeting for the year held by the Burnham Women's Institute, Mrs Nicol presided over a good attendance of members and friends. An interesting letter from the link institute, "Burnham Green," was read. Arrangements t/ere made to hold a birthday party. A demonstration on the making of wood fibre flowers was given by Miss Dini (Christchurch). During the social half-hour a competition was won by Miss Joan Scott with Mrs A. P. Chamberlain second. Winners of the monthly competitions Slice of Christmas cake: Mrs Popple 1. Mrs I. Scott 2, Mrs J. Scott 3. Knitting: Mrs I. Scett 1, Mrs J. Lill 2, Mrs A. W. I Scott 3. Best bloom, large: Miss M. i Chamberlain 1, Mrs A. W. Scott 2, Mrs I J. A- Scott 3; small, Mrs A. P. Chamberlain and Mrs R. ' Chamberlain (equal) 1, Mrs T. Parker 2, Mrs A. W. Scott and Miss Wright (equal) 3. The hostesses were Mesdames W. Popple, W, Regan, and I. Scott. AKAROA A letter of thanks from the children at the recent health camp at Akaroa was received at a committee meeting of the Akaroa Women's Institute. The president (Miss E, Le Lievre) presided. The children wrote thanking the members for the eggs, for which the institute had made an appeal, and also said how happy they had all been at Akaroa. The North Canterbury Federation wrote askiilg for nominations for president, vice-presidents, and committee for the annual meeting to be held in April. ,

A motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs E. Gflynan, who is in the Akaroa Hospital. It was decided that all nominations for next year's committee be in by the next committee meeting on February 22. Arrangements were made for the next meeting, when a demonstration of smocking and addresses would be given. The competitions would be for the best bloom and a programme for 1938. CHEVIOT The monthly meeting of the Cheviot Women's Institute was held on the croquet greens recently. Mrs O. t>. Nell (president) presided. A subcommittee was appointed to select a programme for the next six months, the members being Mesdames G. N. Nell, A. Wilkinson, T". Gurnsey, £,. Bur-' ness, and Misses L. Coppiri and E. Hill. It was decided to send a parcel of gifts to the children's health camp at Rangiora. the gifts to be left with Mrs J. T. Read, who kindly offered to send •them on. Competitions, in which there were good entries, resulted as follows:—Raspberry jam: Mrs Honeybone 1, Mrs McKnight 2, Mrs Archer 3, Vase .of flowers: Mrs Read 1, Mrs Dalgety 2, Mrs Dalgety 3. Slice of Christmas cake: Mrs Dalgety 1, Mrs Archer 2, Mrs G. L. Nell 3. TEMUKA Continuing her series of talks to the members of the Temuka Women's Institute, on the lives of New Zealand pioneers, Miss G. A. Brown gave an address on the life and work of John Edward FitzGerald at the usual monthly meeting. A demonstration and talk on home nursing was given by Mrs M. Guild, and a vote of thanks to Miss Brown and Mrs Guild was passed. Complimentary reference was made by Miss Ferguson to the work of Mrs R. A. Taylor, who has been president of the branch and has now left the district. The competitions resulted:: — Covered umbrella, Mrs H. Wilson 1, Mrs W. J. Rainey 2, Mrs A. S. McInnes 3; bowl of mixed flowers, Mrs J. N. Taylor 1, Mrs Wilson 2, Mrs Rainey 3; strawberry jam, Mrs McInnes 1, Mrs Rainey 2, Mrs M. Williams 3; specimen bloom, Mrs W. S. Harbrow 1, Mrs F. M. Martin 2, Mrs Taylor 3.
