CANADIAN POLICY CRITICISED AT OTTAWA

Recall of Minister from Tokyo Revealed The British attitude to the provisional Government established in North China was discussed in the House of Commons by the Foreign Secretary (Mr Eden), who' sa.d a protest had been made against the discriminatory tariffs introduced in favour of Japanese imports. Mr Eden added that the British Government was giving close consideration to Japanese representations for a greater share in the administration of the International Settlement at Shanghai. The policy of Canada towards Japanese aggression in China was sharply criticised by the Leader of the Opposition (Mr R. B. Bennett), who accused the Government of inactivity. He also condemned a speech made in Tokyo by the Canadian Minister (Mr R. R. Bruce), condoning Japan’s policy. The criticism drew from the Prime Minister (Mr W. L. Mackenzie King) the statement that Mr Bruce had been recalled.
