Sir Henry Gullett left for Dunedin by air yesterday morning. Mr W. J. Lyon, M.P., arrived from the north yesterday morning. Mr V. Hugo, of Auckland, has been appointed one of the judges for the field events in the athletic section of the British Empire Games in Sydney.—Pres; Association. Mr E. J. Howard, M.P., was congratulated by members of the Lyttelton Harbour Board yesterday on his appointment to the Senate of the University of New Zealand. Mr E. C. Lindsay. C.8.E., M. 8., 8.C., F.R.C.S.. a senior surgeon to the London General Hospital, consulting surgeon to the Poplar Hospital, London, and an examiner in surgery at Cambridge University, arrived in Christchurch yesterday morning to visit his mother, Mrs J. Lindsay, Clyde road. He will remain in Christchurch for about three weeks. He is accompanied by his wife. Congratulations to the Rev. Father M. J. Dowling on - his appointment as rector of the College, and to the Rev. Father L, Smith, on his appointment to the rectorship of St. Patrick’s School, the new boys’ secondary school for day students, to be opened at Timaru this year, were extended in the annual report presented to the annual meeting of the St. Bede’s College Old Boys’ Association last night. Messrs W. R. Laney, 8.A., an old boy of Waitaki High School, and W. Ridland, M.Sc., an old pupil of the Christchurch Boys’ High School, have been appointed to the staff of King’s College. Auckland. Mr Laney, who is 24 year? of age, is a New Zealand University Rugby blue, and a well-known Otago cricketer. At present Mr Ridland is a master at the Cathedral Grammar School, Christchurch. He will join the staff at King’s College as science master, and Mr Laney will take up the position of language master.—Press Association.
