CRICKET

♦ AUSTRALIANS TO TOUR ENGLAND ONE OF YOUNGEST TEAMS CHOSEN RECORDS OF LESSER KNOWN PLAYERS The Australian test cricket team chosen to tour England is one of the youngest that has represented Australia. A. G. Chipperfleld and W. J. O’Reilly, both aged 32 years, are the oldest men in the side, and S. Barnes (20) is the youngest. Of the 16 men in the team only five have not played in a test match previously. They are Barnes (New South Wales), B. Barnett (Victoria), A. Hassett (Victoria), M. G. Waite (South Australia), and E. S. White (New South Wales). C. L. Badcock (South Australia), Barnes, J. H. Fingleton (New South Wales), Hassett, E. L. McCormick (Victoria), Waite, F. A. Ward (South Australia), and White have not previously visited England. The team, as has already been announced, is as follows; —D. G. Bradman (South Australia), captain, S. J. McCabe (New South Wales), vice-captein, J. H. Fingleton (New South Wales), W A. Brown (Queensland). C. L. Badcock (South Australia). A. G. Chipperfield (New South Wales), A. Hassett (Victoria), S. Barnes (New South Wales). M. G. Waite (South Australia), E. S. White (New South Wales), W. J. O’Reilly (New South Wales), E. L. McCormick (Victoria), L. O’B. Fleet-wood-Smith (Victoria), C. Walker (South Australia), B. Barnett (Victoria), F. A. Ward (South Australia). Probably those who are less familiar to New Zealand cricket enthusiasts are Barnes, Waite, White. Hassett, and Barnett High Scoring by Barnes Few players have had such a rapid rise as Barnes. He played only two innings last season, and was third in the state averages, scoring 44 and 31. This season he has been extraordinarily successful. Against New Zealand he made 97. Other good scores were 99 not out and 127 not out against Western Australia, 68 against Queensland, 79 against South Australia, 97 against Victoria, and 110 and 42 against Victoria. He has made 815 runs for an average of 67.91. Waite, who is aged 27 years, is an accomplished all-rounder, and is noted for his fast medium bowling. Formerly he was a slow bowler, but when Grimmett went to South Australia Waite changed , his style. With a perfect length, nip oif the wicket, and swing

and spin he should be valuable on English wickets. On a wet wicket. White, who is aged 25, is almost unplayable, gs he showed in a match against South Australia two seasons ago, when he taok eight wickets for 31 runs. He is 3 slowmedium left-hand bowler, with great control, but with little spin. He is a solid batsman. One of the most remarkable batsmen seen in public school cricket in Australia l is Hassett. For some years he was the backbone of Geelong College. He is a sound batsman, and has been remarkably successful for Victoria, having averages of 71.85 last season and 64.7 this season. As a second string he can field almost anywhere, and has the ideal cricket temperament. He is 24 years of age. The wicketkeeper of the team will probably be Barnett, who is cool, consistent, and stylish. This year he has been more brilliant than usual, and has made remarkably few mistakes. He is a left-handed player. The allowance to each member of the side will be £6OO. Each will receive £IOO before leaving, £350 in England, and £l5O on returning to Australia. There is also an allowance of £SO for incidental expenses in England. The selection committee for the tour will be D. G. Bradman, S. J. McCabe, and B. A. Barnett.
