VIOLENT EARTHQUAKE RECORDED
♦ DISTURBANCE OFF frEW GUINEA COAST HOUSES SHAKEN AT DARWIN (.leceived February 2, 10.16 p.m.) SYDNEY, February 2. The Riverview Observatory reports that a violent earthquake shock, displacing the seismograph instruments, was recorded about 5.15 this morning. The disturbance was about 2180 miles north-west of Sydney in the region of Aru Island, in the Arafura Sea, off the southern coast of New Guinea. Severe tremors were felt at Darwin, where houses were shaken. WELLINGTON RECORD Ipbess associatiom tei.eoram.l . WELLINGTON, February 2. One of the biggest long distance earthquakes ever recorded on instruments at the Dominion Observatory started to make a tracing at 7.13| a.m. to-day. , At the maximum phase, the recording points were oscillatory to their greatest extent. . From the records obtained, it is computed that the earthquake was about 3800 miles from Wellington or perhaps slightly more, but in what direction cannot yet be judged.
