JURY URGES HEAVIER PENALTIES
INDECENT ASSAULT CASES (rasas association tstwiisJ AUCKLAND, February 2. “We note with regret the number of indecent assault cases, alid we think that such offences might be met by more severe punishment.” This was the text of a resolution communicated to his Honour Mr Justice Fair by the Grand Jury in the Supreme Court today. His Honour said the Grand Jury’s representation would be given consideration both by himself and Mr Justice Callan. The subject was very difficult to deal with at times. Such offenders seemed to require some sort of treatment, which medical science had found difficult to determine, his Honour said. The Courts had always kept in mind the need for imposing a punishment which would deter others. They had taken into account the effect which the punishment had on other persons who were tempted by the same impulse. His Honour thanked the jury on behalf of the country for the time and consideration they had given to the cases. .
