■ ♦ •WEDNESDAY 'Before Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M.) REMANDED Daniel Michael Murphy (Mr W. R. Lascelles), charged with unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl aged 13 years 11 months, was remanded till February 7. Bail was allowed in the sum of £2OO, with one surety of £2OO. the accused to report daily to the police. Jeannie Knight Ysker was remanded till to-day on a charge of drunkenness. Sub-Inspector Packer said that a pair of shoes, of which she could give no account, were in her possession. TRAFFIC OFFENCES The following offenders against traffic regulations were fined (.and ordered to pay costs) or otherwise dealt with as follows on charges brought by the Waimairi County Council: — Exceeding speed limit of 30 miles an hour—George Hickmott, 10s. Driving motor-cycle without sufficient lights; 10s. . Driving motor-cycle at a speed in excess of the limit of 30 miles an hour and having ho licence —Robert Pullar, 30s (first charge), costs only. FAILING TO TENDER FARE Mrs E. A. Burt was fined Is and ordered to pay costs andJegal expenses for failing to tender the proper fare in a tram. ~ _ Mr J. D. Hutchison, for the Tramway Board, said that the defendant had boarded the tram at New Brighton, intending to travel to Dacre street. She tendered a weekly pass, which was available within a radius of four sections from Cathedral square. She had been asked by the conductor to pay the fare for the distance. to the stop where the pass would become available, but had declined to do so. She had been written to twice by the board, but had given no reply. , , , Joseph Marks was ordered to pay costs and legal expenses for failing to tender the proper fare. Mr Hutchison said that Marks had at first disputed the matter, but on the day the summons was issued he had offered to pay the /are. It was refused, and he was ref erred to the board’s solicitor, but he had declined to see the solicitor. He had also been requested to pay the fare for another occasion, but in this case he was not being charged with failure to pay. Marks said that he had forgotten the first occasion and had consequently disputed both with the board. THEFT OF MONEY Charged with stealing £1 in silver from the till of the Madeira Hotel, Akaroa, the property of William Ernest Swainson, Alfred William Donaldson, alias Alfred Stanley Donaldson, Alfred William McDonald, and Alfred William Stanley, was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment. Sub-Inspector Packer said that Donaldson. who was out from prison on licence, and had been declared a habitual criminal, had been on a drinking bout at Akaroa. where he had taken the money from the till when the bar was empty. PLEA OF GUILTY Edward Gregg Hodgson Pleaded guilty to damaging bottles of liquor and aerated waters to the value of £ll, the property of George Frederick Hodgson, thereby committing misCh Sub-Inspector Packer said that Gregg was a returned soldier suitering fairly severely from head injuries. He had gone to see his brother at Southbrook, and a difference had arisen between them. The focused had then gone into his brother s hotel and broken the bottles. Mr Walton, for the accused, said that he had served in the Boer War and the Great War. He had suffered badly from shell shock and was now a bad case of nerves.. He had an alleged grievance against his brother over money which he claimed to have lost when staying at his brothers Gregg was ordered to come up for sentence if called on within six months and to pay costs.

RANGIORA (Before Mr H. A. Young, S.M.) Pleading guilty to a charge of having obtained £9 5s 3d from the Employment Fund by means of a false declaration of income, Herbert George Reddington, a farm manager, of Oxford, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within 12 months. He was ordered to refund the money as directed by the probation officer. Constable R. C. Drummond (Oxford) stated that the offence took place between April 19 and August 28 last year in Christchurch, where Reddington was on sustenance. Reddington had not disclosed all his earnings in the period. LIQUOR CASE Arthur John Henry Lange (Mr C. V. Quigley), licensee of the Commercial Hotel at Oxford, who pleaded guilty, was fined £3 and ordered to pay costs for having sold liquor after hours. A second charge was withdrawn. Pius Joseph Sexton, for having been on the licensed premises of the Commercial Hotel after hours, was fined £1 and ordered to pay costs. MOTORING OFFENCE To charges of having driven a motor-car without due care and attention and of having no warrant of fitness for the car, John Lindon pleaded guilty, and was convicted and ordered to pay costs on each charge. DESTRUCTION OF HORSE Arthur Watson Inch (Mr E. D. R. Smith) claimed £SO from James Cook (Mr C. S. Thomas) for the destruction of a draught horse which was killed in a collision with a motor truck driven by defendant’s son. The plaintiff alleged negligence on the part of defendant by his agent (his son), but, after lengthy evidence had been heard, the Magistrate said be was satisfied that there had not been any negligence on defendant’s part. Judgment was given for defendant with costs. CIVIL CASES Judgment for plaintiff by default, with an order for costs, was given in the following undefended civil case: Owen Alford (Mr Smith) v. A. Dyer, £2 10s. t „ On a judgment summons J. Trowbridge was ordered to pay Weeks, Ltd. (Mr H. K. Kippenberger), £3 Os 6d forthwith, in default four days’ imprisonment.
