TURF GOSSIP Reminder ‘ Acceptances for the first day of the Dunedin Jockey Club's meeting will close at 5 p.m. to-morrow. An Excellent Programme An excellent list of acceptances has been received for the Canterbury Jockey Club’s summer meeting on Saturday, and intending patrons- can look forward to a most interesting afternoon’s racing. There were very few defections, and six of the eight fields will allow for three place dividends. The Middle Park Plate did not draw as strong a field as had been suggested earlier, but there should still be a close contest. The Midsummer Handicap has filled with seven proved middle-distance performers, and it would be difficult at this stage to forecast the favourite division. Some promising two-year-olds will contest the Lyttelton Handicap, and again speculation will be widely distributed. Trench Fight, Kinnoull, Waitaka, and Janet Gaynor were the only withdrawals from the Craven Plate, and of these Waitaka will fill his place in the Midsummer Handicap. The concluding event, the Post Handicap, has attracted an excellent field both in quality and in numbers, and this should provide probably the best pool of the day. Special trains will leave Christchurch for the Riccarton racecourse at 11.50 a.m., 12.13 p.m., and 12.31 p.m., and trains will return at frequent intervals after the races. The second race train from the course will connect at Sockburn with the evening train for Little River (Christchurch depart 5.46 p.m.). Ashburton (Christchurch depart 5.50 p.m.). Southbridge (Christchurch depart 5.55 p.m.), and Springfield (Christchurch depart 6.0 p.m.). The second race train will also connect at Addington with the evening train for Waikari (Christchurch depart 6.5 p.m.). • Riders for Saturday Some riding engagements for Saturday’s programme at Riccarton arenas follows;—G. Humphries, Paper Slipper; L. J. Ellis. Nolana. Studley Royal, Defaulter, Raeburn; C. Wilson, Davolo, Grey Honour, Nightdress, Balmenter, Shooting Star, Denistry; W. Jenkins, Happy Night, Nightcalm, Dnnkup: A. Stove, Grampian: A. Parsons, Convivial; J. Jennings, Sovereign Lady. Flame Queen, Owlsgleam, Rebel Chief. Recommissioned The Grasper, who failed to win a race for Mr A. S. Elworthy last year, is now one of Mrs J. Campbells team and will no doubt be raced over hurdles later in the season. Returned from Australia The former Riccarton and Washdyke trainer, E. J. Burns, has returned to Riccarton from Australia, and if opportunity offers will settle again m the South Island. During his absence. Burns was attached to the big stable controlled by J. King at RanuWick. A Stable Triumph The wins of Improvement and Housemaster at Rosehill on Saturday save Mr W. S. Glenn a double success, loth are by Chief Ruler. Improve, ment being out of Nasselie and Housemaster out of Fillette. Another Change Wotan has joined the New Plymouth stable of H. Dulieu. , x , , . Francis Drake disappointed his connexions at Wellington and it has been decided to try him over middle distances. Successful Trainer The win of Red Manfred at Ascot on Saturday indicates that J. Fryer is now doing well in Victoria. Elanage has proved a fine stake-earner for the stable, but wins have also been gained by Pantoon, twice; Red Manfred twice, and International. In addition, place money has also been earned. Fryer has more than a dozen horses in commission and the stable has won approximately £6OOO for the season so fat. In Wrong Mood Pakanui has become a problem both for his connexions and supporters. He would appear to be soured of racing, for the time being, at any rate, though he may recover his temper and form on softer tracks. Big increase At first sight the increase in totalisator turnover on the first day of the Takapuna meeting from £19,070 to £48,524 seems extraordinary, but last year the first day was held in tempestuous rain with pools of water all over the course, and it was also a Friday. Still, a turnover of £48,000 odd is an excellent one. In India Private advice has been received that the Auckland-bred gelding Kahapa, by General Latour from March, recently won the Governor’s Clip at Bombay. Kahapa, a full brother to the good stayer Te Kara, was purchased for India about two years ago, and has done well for his purchaser. He was successful at Calcutta last month, ahd was third in the Viceroy’s Cup. New Trainer F. McHugh has set up as a public trainer at Marten, and has leased the stables recently vacated by L. G. Morris, who has gone to Awapuni. McHugh has two horses in his care, and it should not be long before he has more The horses are Brazen King and Brlgadore, and the former wiU probably have his next race at Wanganui. Brlgadore is to be prepared for another winter campaign. A Solid Tesi Wildflower, winner of the Ashhurst Gup on Anniversary Day, is to contest to-day’s Taranaki Cup. run over an extra furlong. The Cfiuef Ruler filly had little to Spare at Ashhurst. and it is problematical whether an 11-furlong journey will be to her liking but she should improve with age. Her older half-brother, Siegmund, has certainly made gcod, Dancrctous Cheval de Volee, who is one of those engaged id the Taranaki Gup today, had his first try-out ih good class handicap company and over a middle distance when he took on the Takapuna Cup on Saturday., He was by ho means disgraced, for he was still handy at the home turn, after being always prominent, and he finished in the bunch almost up with the placed division. The Vaals gelding wen the Taranaki Stakes at the Taranaki msetihg 12 months ago, much to the. consternation of racegoers. He might again upset One of his fields this week.

WELLINGTON T.C. FIRST DAY’S MEETING The Wellington Trotting Club has received excellent acceptances .for the opening of its meeting to-day, and the meeting should be one of the , most successful held in recent years. Eight horses remain in the New Zealand Gold Cup Handicap, and they include some of the best horses in training. Canterbury stables are well represented, while Auckland trainers have also accorded solid support. The win and place system of betting will be in operation. The following horses should be supported in their different engagements: Preliminary Handicap Native Huon, Gay Crusader, Esther. Gracefield Handicap—Anna Wong, Storm Signal, Pagan. Hutt Handicap—Laurene Wood, Policy, Zincali. Gold Cup Handicap—Lucky Jack. Plutus, King’s Warrior. Progressive Handicap—Native Huon, Gay Crusader. Parrish Guide. Probationers’ Handicap—Becky Direct, Jackaranda, Storm Signal. Dispatch Handicap—Taruna, Marlene, Francisco. Kia Ora Handicap— Southern Chief, Musketeer, Ace Pot. The programme is as follows:

Taranaki Meeting Racing at New Plymouth to-day should be keen and interesting, as there are several prominent visitors engaged, and the ruhning in the Flying Handicap should, provide a line oh the Taranaki Stakes, to be decided on Saturday. This classic event promises to be an exceptionally interesting.race, and the highlight of the week. Horses racing to-day Who are engaged m the Stakes include Stretto, Oratory, Brunhild and the two-year-old Surmount. These ih themselves would make a great race, but there are also Relative, Namark. Sudan, and others to rtxake up one of the best fields in recent years. Promising Juveniles A couple of improving two-year-olds were seen at Pahiatua, Brazil, who was having his first face, belongs to a Well-known and successful line, being by Pombal from Episode, dam also of Epigram, Burnish, and Entail. Episode is a sister to Honour and Couttcraft, and half-sister to Heritage. Brazil, Who is owned by Mr Ralph Lowry, was having his first race, ana tan very greenly, but he Showed a lot of promise. Cherry Plum, who had had two previous races, and had run third on the concluding day at Mariawatu, showed sufficient improvement to win in solid style on the second day from the first day’s, winner, Twenty Grand. Twenty Grand looks as If he will be better served by time. Cherry Plum, one of the BeHU Petes, is a half-brother to Chief Cook, Cherry Queen, Cherry King, and Jack Horner. He is ratted on lease from his bteefler, Mr Frank Armstrong.

TROTTING NOTES

A Non-Starter Lucky Jack will not be a starter at the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting this week. Plutus is also a doubtful starter. Reminders There will be racing at Hutt Park, Wellington, to-day and Saturday. Nominations for the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting will close at 5 p.m. next Wednesday. Storm Signal Storm Signal, who is engaged at the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting today is a three-year-old filly by Real Guv from Waitaki Lass and is trained bv C K. Yeatman for Mrs C. Manera. Storm Signal showed promising form Greymouth, when she ran second to Waikari Jack in the Guinness Handicap and third to Bayard and Kings Jubilee in the Westland Handicap. She is a good-mannered filly and may race well to-day. Champion Three-year-old Radiant Walla, by Walla Walla, is described as the greatest three-year-old raced in Australia. His record to date is 11 starts, nine wins. His latest victory was attained at the Australian Trotting Club’s .meeting on January 24, when he registered 2min 50 l-ssec for a mile and a quarter. By Prince Pointer Judy Pointer, by Prince Pointer— Judy, won the Richmond Handicap, of two miles, at the Ascot meeting on January 24. She started at a doublefigure price and covered the two miles in 4min 36 l-ssec. An Old Stager Dalla Derby, who has been nominated for the Inter-Dominion Championships, is 12 years old and has not started in a race for a long time. Change of Stables M. Holmes has an addition to his team in the Southland-owned trotter. Fair Voyage, a winner on the second day of the Forbury Park meeting. Jottings for Wellington Ideal, winner of the Nelson Cup, is not engaged on either day at Wellington. Nawton Parrish, who has been very consistent, is the Auckland fancy for the Kia Ora Handicap. Elsie Hamlyn has shown promise. She is a six-year-old chestnut mare by Peter Bingen—Cornelian. Starwyn was in fine form at the Auckland meeting, and is on the improve. He is now thoroughly acclimatised, and should be capable of showing better form than he has yet revealed. It is many years since Auckland has been so strongly represented as it will be at this week’s meeting at Hutt Park. Entries from there totalled 18 horses.. Although Fremont is described as a four-year-old, he is actually a three-year-old, as he was foaled in the States, where the breeding season is several months earlier than here. Willow Wave’s time in the Metropolitan Handicap, 4min 20 l-ssec, is his fastest official time to date. It is said that he went 4min 13sec from post to post in the President’s Handicap at Auckland. Tristan is a four-year-old pacer by Nelson McElwyn from Bell o’ Brass, dam of the consistent Gay Sister. This is a notable family of some 15 to 20 years ago, but only one or two of Nelson McElwyn’s progeny have shown any form. Walnut Hall Yearlings Peter Volo, 2min 2sec, the great American sire that died in November, 1936, when more than 25 years old, was responsible for the highest-priced yearlings (foals of 1936) at the Old Glory sale. Peter Volo’s 21 yearlings made an average of 1600 dollars. Top price of 6800 dollars was paid for the filly by Peter Volo from Margaret Arion, 2min 10] sec, dam also of Protector, Irnin 59 J sec, and The Marchioness, Imln 59isec. The famous Walnut Hall Farm’s consignment totalled no fewer than 95, the average price being 1200 dollars. F. J. Smith’s Team F J. Smith' has five horses engaged at Wellington. Myrtle Oro, who has been making some headway of late, is to contest the novice events, and is not without prospects. At the recent Lambridge meeting she was disputing the issue 50 yards from the post when she made a slight break. But for this she would probably have filled a place. Chili Bean, who has only recently joined the stable, is a promising pacer He has displayed fine speed m all of his races, and but for a tendency to skip at a crucial s', -ge of a contest his winnings would probably have been much bigger. Another middle-class performer who will have to be considered is Musketeer, one of the most promising stayers In the North Island. At Epsom he was responsible for a class performance in covering two miles in 4min 29 3-ssec, and a repetition of that form would see him collecting a stake. The colours of the Takanini stable will be carried by Bonny Azure and King’s Warrior m the New Zealand Trotting Gold Cup. The former registered some outstanding performances in the south last season, but it cannot be said her efforts recently have been noted for the same brilliance. On the final day of the Auckland summer meeting she set the pace in the President’s Handicap over the first mile and a half, but stopped badly when the pressure was applied. King’s Warrior paced a great race When narrowly beaten in the Auckland Trotting Cup.

ASHBURTON T.C, DESIRE FOR VISIT BY AUSTRALIAN HORSES As an inducement to those in charge of the Australian horses that will be taking part in the inter-Dominion trotting championships at Christchurch c.t Easter, to Send the visiting horses to Ashburton, the Ashburton Trotting Club on Tuesday evening decided to include a fast class mile and a half event at the autumn meeting, which is to be held on April 9. To cater for this event, the club has decided to increase the stake money for that meeting by £IOOO. As the New Zealand Futurity Stakes for three-year-olds will be run at that meeting, the club has transferred the All Age Stakes (which was also on the programme) to the winter meeting. The stake money for the New Zealand Sapling Stakes, 1939, was fixed at £I2OO, and that for the New Zealand Champion Stakes, 1939, at £790, these sums being the same as for previous similar events. . . The secretary (Mr J. B. Nicoll) presented a financial statement in regard to the Boxing Day meeting. This disclosed a satisfactory profit. Mr H. F. Nicoll (president) presided over the meeting A Profitable Purchase Play On, who was bought by Mr M. Millar before the second day of the Wellington meeting, has not taken long to make a return of his. purchase money. At his first and only start at Trentham for his new owner he had the misfortune to get chopped out at that start and lose his chance, but his trip to Takapuna turned out successfully Those who had seen him racing in the north before predicted that he would go better on the right-handed track at Elletslie than he would the other way round, but there is no reason why he should not prove a good proposition elsewhere.

INTER-DOMINION TROTTING

IJtUTTJJNU PROSPECTS OF AUSTRALIAN PACERS LAWN DERBY, MARBLE BATH, AND WRINKLE Great interest is being taken in the inter-Dominion championships to be decided at Addington in April, and owners of Australian horses are confident that their champions will hold their own with the best in New Zealand. In discussing the prospects of South Australian entrants, “Pistol,” writing in the Adelaide “Advertiser,” says: “Wrinkle and Marble Bath appeal as the Australian horses likely to do best in the inter-Dominion championships. On the form shown at the last championships at Wayville both should safely hold Lawn Derby, who appears to have been rather harshly treated. He is 48 yards behind in the mile and a quarter race and 60 yards behind in the other events. Marble Bath is on scratch and Wrinkle on 12 yards. On what has been seen of the horses at Wayville Lawn Derby would have to improve several seconds to have much chance of defeating either Wrinkle or Marble Bath over two miles. To support this claim it is only necessary to consider the happenings in the two miles qualifying race at the last championships. In that race Lawn Derby and Wrinkle both started off scratch and after the former had established a long lead Wrinkle came along and beat him decisively. In New Zealand Lawn Derby will be called upon to concede 48 yards to Wrinkle over two miles and if both horses are produced fit and well most South Australians will be prepared to see the Lulu Bay horse finish in front of his New South Wales rival.” ’ Marble Bath will probably be feared more by Wrinkle’s owner, Mr W. J. Messenger, who has always claimed that Wrinkle is Lawn Derby’s master over the longer journeys, and on what has been seen of Marble Bath at Wayville he may be right. Marble Bath was always something of a mystery horse, as, except for one night when he was defeated by Speedmill, to whom he had to concede a long start, he was never fully extended. More than once he has given evidence of the possession of phenomenal speed, and most Australian owners who have seen him in action will put him down as having a great chance at Addington. In view of the declaration of handicaps it is interesting to compare the marks of the Australian horses that raced at Wayville with their penalties at Addington. They are as follows: —

WELLINGTON NOTES LUCKY JACK AND PLUTUS ' WITHDRAWN (THE PRESS Special Service.] WELLINGTON, February 2. Lucky Jack Will not be a Starter In the New Zealand Trotting Gold Cup at Hutt Park to-morrow, and he has also been withdrawn from other engagements. There is nothing wrong With him. but it is understood that championship considerations have led to R. B. Berry’s decision to forgo engagements of his representative. Plutua has also been scratched for the Gold Cup. C. S. Donald was still under the impression that Mr Gudsell might send the horse north to-night, but the owner arrived in Wellington to-day, and, after a conference with Donald, decided to take the horse out of both engagementsFavourite Well The New Zealand Trotting Gold Cup favourite, Kingjs Play, is a model of condition, and he moved very freely when doing strong pace work at Hutt Park this morning. Ideal broke down after contesting the Nelson Cup, and his trainer, L. O. Thomas, fears that some time will elapse before his charge again races. Superior Rank is suffering from slight leg trouble, but it is expected that he will take his place in the Kia Ora Handicap to-morrow. Overtaxed AH of the Aucklanders have arrived and with a large number of other visitors also to hand accommodation at the course is overtaxed. Several new yards are being erected to cope with the situation. The Auckland trotters are a good lot. Elissa won over two miles from 120 yards at Waikato in 4min 43 1-5 sec, and was second in two races at Auckland, clocking 4min 34 2-ssec from 96 yards in one of these events. That reads like very good fofm indeed. Manna’s Son ran second at Auckland in 3min 2? 4-ssec, and Mute won at the same meeting ip 3mifl 28 sec. Chili Bean A northerner who will receive attention is Chili Bean. This half-brother by Jack Potts to Sir Guy and Guy Junior recently went into F. J. Smith’s stable, and quick returns are the rlile When already proved paters go to Takanini. Chili Bean has twice won over a mile- and a quarter this season, his best time being 2min ,47 3-ssec. Elsie Hamlyn’s dam ( Cornelian, is by the old-time champion Author Dillon, from Pearlchild, a great producer, whose family includes many first-class winners. Elsie Hamlyn is by the dual New Zealand Cup winlier Peter Bingen. Prince McElWyn, who will make hi§ first public appearance in the Gracefield Trial Handicap to-morrow, is a four-year-old gelding by David McElwytii from Tracey Princess (dam of Whetu and Ngingongingo). Wh&rrun is a .four-year-old. bay gelding by Nelsoh Derby from Lrgari Lou. &hd is owned and trained by B. Grice.
