LAWN TENNIS

♦ CHAMPIONSHIPS OP WEST COAST OPENING PLAY YESTERDAY The West Coast Lawn Tennis Association’s annual championship and handicap tournament opened yesterday. The day was warm and cloudless, and the conditions produced tennis of a good standard. Both at the Grey courts, where the women’s matches were played, and at the United courts, where the men’s matches were played, there were good galleries. Play yesterday was concentrated mainly on the men’s and women's championship singles, which were proceeded with till the end of the second round, when a start was made with the championship doubles. A start was also made with the handicap events. Interest in the men’s singles centred mostly on matches in which the seeded players, G. E. Reid, P. Warner, E. K. Halstead, and R. O’Gorman were concerned. Against Reid, C. Plimmer put up a good stand, extending the title-holder in the first set to advantage games. In the second set, however, Reid started to attack from the net, smashing and volleying decisively to run out 6-3. R. O’Gorman had no trouble in beating his opponent. P. Warnes, in defeating R. Innes 6-4, 6-2, held something in reserve, although there were times when Innes had him worried with medium-paced drives of good length. Halstead disposed of Clarke in straight sets. The match was a gruelling one, and

there were many long driving rallies. In the second set Clarke produced a last flat drive and led 4-1 and 40-30 on his serve. He could not last the pace, however, and Halstead took five games in a row to run out tire winner 6-1, 6-4. Results were: — MEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP SINGLES First Round T. Childs beat B.
