STEADY RAIN AT GISBORNE
DROUGHT AVERTED FIRST RAINFALL FOR FIVE WEEKS (VBZSS ASSOCIATION TBLEGEAM.) GISBORNE, January 24. A threatened drought in Gisborne was averted to-day, when after five weeks’ dry weather and high temperatures, rain fell for two or three hours, but a fierce sun at noon soon dried the lands once more. Towards 5 p.m. the sky became overcast again, and heavy north-east rain fell, and tonight showed no signs of cessation. Rain is badly needed. Residents on the flats have been carting water for weeks. Reports from the backblocks say that rain is general throughout the district, which should prove invaluable to the dairying and fruit industries.
