TRANS-TASMAN YACHT RACE

reported sighting of the AURORA STAR SYDNEY, January 24. The New Zealand cruiser Achilles has reported sighting the yacht Aurora Star, which is a competitor in the trans-Tasman race, 15 miles north of Cape Maria van Diemen. A meteorologist says that the competing yachts would have encountered yesterday’s cyclone, which was causing high seas in the eastern Tasman. It is generally agreed that they would have to nde out the gale hove-to. The Aurora Star left Auckland on Tuesday evening with the yacht Wayfarer in a race to Hobart. When sighted, the Aurora was 240 miles out, and had travelled at an average speed of four knots. The Wayfarer was not seen.
