N.Z. SURF TEAM CHOSEN

“ + FOUR CANTERBURY MEN INCLUDED REPRESENTATIVES FOR AUSTRALIA FINAL TRIALS YESTERDAY The final trials to select a Zealand surf life-saving team to compete in Australia next month were held at New Brighton yesterday, and the team was announced last evening by the selectors, Messrs H. S. Feast (who will manage the team), P. D. Edwards, and V. Allen. The team consists of five men from Wellington, four from Canterbury, and one from Auckland. All the men chosen have been prominent in life-saving and swimming in New Zealand, some of them for many years, and all of them have been successful in the National Championship meeting this year. Ten men are included in the team, the youngest being 20 years of age.

The Canterbury representatives in the team have all been associated with life-saving for a number of years. Two of them are from the Taylor’s Mistake Club, one is from the North Beach Club, and the other represents the New Brighton Club. A. T. DALTON (North Beach). Dalton, who was second in this year’s beltman’s- championship, was New Zealand champion beltman in 1936 and 1937, and represented New Zealand against the Australian surf life-saving team last ytar. He is 31 years of age, weighs 13st 101b, and is 6Ct in height. For 100 yards his best time is 60sec. for the 220 yards it is 2min 40ssc, and for the 440 yards smin 40sec. A. T. F. STOKES (New Brighton). Stokes has been the holder of every Canterbury free style title, and holder of the New Zealand titles for the 220 yards, 440 yards, 880 yards, and one mile free style events. He is Oft in height, weighs I3st 21b, and is 29 years of ago. His best times are: 100 yards, 59sec; 220 yards, 2min 30sec; 440 yards. smin 26sec, D, H. SYMES (Taylor’s Mistake). Symes has been a Canterbury and Otago University representative swimmer and has held Canterbury and New Zealand sprint swimming titles. He is 27 years of age, weighs 14st 51b, and is sft llin in height. His best times are; 100 yards, 56sec; 220 yards, 2mm 84 4-ssec; 440 yards, smin 21sec,-

J. A, YOUNG (Taylor’s Mistake). Young was the winner of the Kellerman Cup in 1934. Ho is 21 years of age, 6ft in height, and weighs 14 stone. He has recorded good times for all the sprint swimming events. .T. T. CLARK (Maranui, Wellington). Clark, who was Wellington champion beltman in 1936 and 1937, lias recorded good times for sprint swimming. He is 20 years of age, weighs 12 stone, and is 6ft in height. D. K. EVANS (Maranui). Evans was a member of the champion four-man alarm team for 1938, and returned fastest time in the Peck Shield event in 1937. He is 21 years of age. sft llin in height, and weighs 12st 101b. J. C. BLAKELEY (Lyall Bay, Wellington). Blakeley was New Zealand champion beltman in 1930 and again in 1938. He represented Wellington for eight years at water polo, won the Kellerman Cup in record tirtie in 1934, and again in 1936, and was New Zealand relay champion in 1928 and 1929. He is 31 years of age, sft llin in height and weighs list 121b. P. PELHAM (Lyall Bay). Pelham, who was a Maori Rugby football All Black in 1926, 1928, and 1930 represented New Zealand against the Australian -surf life-saving team last year. He held the New Zealand surf championship in 1929 and the national 440 yards title in 1925. He is 36 years of age, weighs list 11b, and is sft 9in in height. His times for all the sprint events are good. J. WILLIAMS (Lyall Bay). Williams has represented Wellington at water polo, and has held the Wellington 150 yards backstroke title. He is 25 years of age, sft llin in height, and weighs 12st 101b. E. J. STEVENS (Takapuna, Auckland). Stevens represented Auckland at water polo from 1934 to 1937, and held the Auckland belt championship in 1935 and 1937. He is 22 years of age, weighs 13 stone, and is 6ft lin in height. At the trials yesterday afternoon, five heats of a belt swim event were held. Each man had to swim with a belt out to the buoy while the other men in the team took positions as linesmen and reelmen. Land drill was held, and later the placed competitors in that section had another water run. Results of the belt swim were:— First Heat—A. T. Dalton 1, F. G. Ryan 2, H. G. Goldsmith 3, C. E. Claridge 4; times, 3min 22sec, 3mm 28sec, 3min 38sec. Second heat: J. C. Blakeley 1, D. H. Symes 2, H. C. Downes 3. M. T. Butterick 4; times, 3mm 23sec, 3min 31sec, 3min 43sec. Third heat' J. T Clark 1, J. Williams 2, N. J. McPhail 3, C. W. Elliott 4; times, 3mm 25sec, 3min 27sec, 3min 47sec. Fourth heat; A. T. F. Stokes 1, C. A. R. Buchanan 2, F. Pennington 3, D. L. Burton 4; times, 3min ssec, 3min 24sec, 3min 34sec. Fifth heat: R. Pelham 1, J. A. Young 2, D. K. Evans 3, T. B. Hewitt 4, O. G. Wood 5; times, 3mm 15sec, 3min 19sec, 3min 26sec.
