SOUTH AFRICAN DEFENCE
ARMAMENT FACTORY PLANNED STRONGER AIR FORCE AIMED AT (united tress association- —copy-right.) (Received January 23, 8 p.m.) PRETORIA, January 22. Mr O. Pirow (Minister for Defence), in his speech at the Burgher Commandants' Conference, announced that the South African Government was erecting a factory in Pretoria, for the large-scale manufacture of heavy guns, tanks, armoured cars, and bombs. At first it will manufacture lorries, but it will be convertible for the manufacture of war materials in the event of hostilities. It has also been arranged for private firms to supplement supplies of bombs, shells, and ammunition. The Government is completing plans for a great force of fighting aeroplanes, and also of transport aeroplanes to help in the supply of the Bushveld brigade in the northern deserts. He added that South Africa had no agreement with Portugal, but could not allow an eastern nation to occupy Lorenco Marques, which was within bombing distance of the Union's gold mines and ammunition factories.
