REFUELLING IN THE AIR

♦ TESTS CARRIED OUT AT SOUTHAMPTON SUCCESSFUL TRIALS WITH FLYING-BOAT (BBI'.'ISB OFFICIAL WIRELESS.) RUGBY, January 20. Sir Alan Cobham is co-operating in a series of tests for refuelling aeroplanes in the air. These are being carried out over Southampton with the Empire flying-boat Cambria. According to reports, when the flying speed is approaching 150 miles an hour the Cambria is refuelled from a low-winged monoplane flying above her, the petrol being pumped into her tanks through a special pipe line lowered from the monoplane. It is understood that the trials are proving very successful.
