He looked likely to take part in the finish when the run home was commenced, but the ordeal had taken too much out of him. Salient Knight, Studley Royal, and Cricket also lost their chances at the start. The field appeared to move oft evenly; but the four horses mentioned were squeezed back in the first few strides. Te Hero has practically recovered from his slight mishap. His owner stated yesterday that the colt could have filled his place in the Wellington Stakes, but with so many other good races ahead for him. it was not deemed wise to take any risks with him. A substantial offer for Te Hero, made by Mr J. T Jamieson, on behalf of an Australian client, was rejected on Wednesday.

Puzzle for Investors One of the most difficult fields at Trentham to-day is that for the concluding event of the meeting. It includes winners on the previous two .days in Cricket. foeailt of Jockey The apprentice rider, E. A. Jones, contracted a sudden illness on the eve of the recent Vincent meeting, and was admitted to the Clyde Hospital and died on Thursday. He was born in Melbourne and came to New Zealand just over 12 months ago. For some time he was apprenticed to C. J. McGregor, at Riccarton, and a few weeks back he transferred to P. T. Hogan's stable. Jones won several races in the South over the holidays and in addition toproving himself a very capable horseman ne was held in high esteem in racing circles. A Small Figure

Gay Round, the dam of Happy Night. came under the hammer at Trentham yesterday, and at 30 guineas was- sold to a North Island buyer. Gay Round is a half-sister to the dam of Phar Lap. Passed In A heroine of Riccarton in a Grand National Steeplechase and Lincoln Steeplechase winner, Aurora Boreahs was submitted for sale at Trentham yesterday, but was passed in at 325 iuineas. Aurora Borealis is the dam of Aurora's Love, a promising' hurdler, and has a colt foal by Defoe.

From Timaru . The Elloughton Grange studmaster «r Donald Grant, offered five brood taares at auction at Trentham yesterday, and they were sold for 467 J Buineas. The top price'of 240 guinear Was paid for Pacify, by Limond from Makepeace, while Jarretiere made 110 suineas.

NOMINATIONS FOR THE SUMMER MEETING

Nominations for the summer meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club were received last evening. The total is only slightly lower than last year, but only nine were nominated for the mile and a quarter Midsummer Handicap, and after the first forfeit only eight remain in the Middle Park Plate.

Short Circuit was sold by Mr A. S. Geori.\ at Trentham yesterday, for 55 guintas to Mrs Gaine Carrington, who intends to retire her to the stud. Her half-brother. Gold Cross, was also so Id for 10 guineas, and a three-year filly by Paper Money, from Zora, a sister to Gold Cross, was disposed of for 27* guineas.

For Hurdling: The seven-year-old gelding. Darecourt by Gainscourt from Kaladare by All' Black, formerly trained by T R George, was purchased at Trentham yesterday by C. C. McCarthy, of Riccarton. on behalf of Mr W. Connolly, of Timaru. who intends trying him as a jumper.

Wellington Trotting Club

The policv of putting on tight-limit two-mile races for the best class of pacers was maintained by the Wellington Trotting Club, with the result that the Trotting Gold Cup, a taiin 26sec class, has attracted another collection of high-class performers. Included in the list are Canterburytrained horses in Lucky Jack, Willow Wave Plutus, De Soto, Graham Direct. War Buov. and Speedy Boy, and entrants from the Auckland province are King's Play, King's Warrior and Bonnv Azure. Evicus and Bingen Palm complete the field of 12. With one or two exceptions, the best available in the South Island have been entered, and it is a long time since Auckland was more strongly represented ana this will be one of the most interSting events staged this season. A food supporting programme has been Arranged and the nominations indicate a most successful gathering.

There was every indication this evening of more fine weather for the concluding day's racing at Trentham to-morrow. The day will be a general holiday, and a record crowd is anticipated. The fields are all reasonably well filled, and as is usual at Trentham, investors will be faced 'with some intricate problems. There will be some fresh blood racing, most notable being Francis Drake, who will no doubt be in keen demand in the Thorndon Handicap.

Reminder Acceptances for the first day of the Nelson Trotting Club's meeting will close on Monday, at 8 p.m. Speedy Trotter It is some time since Gaynor won a race, but she has often displayed great speed, and 'she appears to be one of the smartest trotters in her present class. At the recent Canterbury Park meeting she was unluckily beaten into second place, and if she repeats her effort there she will be prominent in her Forbury Park engagements. Small Team

A. Butterfield never has a great number of horses about him, and at the moment he is devoting most of his attention to Chaise and Co-direc-tor. Chaise displayed a deal of promise when he first raced, but so far he has failed to get on the winning list. However, he is a pacer who should benefit with time, and he may yet be seen to advantage. Co-director is a novice who nas shaped well on the tracks. He has done little racing, and he is not being hurried in his preparation. Fremont

The American-bred Fremont did not keep his Timaru engagement last week, but he figures among the improvers accepted for on the first day of the Forbury Park meeting, and his appearance at that fixture will cause interest. Although he won one race at the Auckland Cup meeting, he was generally considered to be one of the most unlucky horses racing at Epsom. He is inclined to race greenly, and when he has acquired more experience he should prove outstanding in his present class, Logan Derby Injured Because of knee injuries received a few weeks ago, which are responding to veterinary treatment, Logan Derby will not be a competitor at the interDominion championships, states the "Australian Trotting Record." According to a Tasmania n report, Mr H Barnes has by letter withdrawp the versatile Globe Derby stallion from his New Zealand engagements. Wherever raced, Logan Derby has won well.'and in 1936 he was the outstanding performer at the Australian championship carnival in PerthImprover Of Merit

Since he began racing early this season, Great Divide has compiled an impressive record of three wins and two minor placings to work his way to useful company. At the Canterbury Park meeting he proved himself to be capable of running a smart mile and a half, and although he is inclined to go away from the barrier at a gallop, he has few faults. He is nicely placed on the limit of the Electric Handicap on the opening day of-the Forbury Park meeting next week, and may give further proof of his usefulness.
