DOYLESTON SPORTS MEETING LOSS OF £24 SHOWN At a meeting of the Doylcston Athletic Club, a loss of about £24 on the recent postponed sports meeting was reported, the total receipts, including a balance of £2B 8s 7d brought forward. being £214. The secretary stated that subscriptions and contributions were £l6 less, prize money £ll more, and more than £l2 had been spent on the racing track. Regret was expressed at a lack of interest on the part of the younger people. Thanks were accorded Mrs D. S. Moorhead for acting as judge of the baby show, and to the Railway Department for running a special train. A dance was held in the evening- at the Drill Hall organised by the Kaikoura Athletic and Cycling Club. There was a very large attendance. Mrs W. D. Sabis ton’s dance band supplied the music. CRICKET KAIKOURA PLATS MENDIP HILLS RESULT A DRAWN GAME The return match between Kiakoura and Mendip Hills was played on Sunday on the Takahanga Domain. Kaikoura scored 253 (J. A. Reid 41, F. Hobbs 36, O. Pratt 28, M. Comer 28, G. May 27, and M. Ferry 24). Bowling for the Mendip Hills, Shirreffs took four wickets for 50 runs, end Peters four for 58. Mendip Hills made 186 (D. Erikson 28, T. Blunt 23, P. Steel 24. Crossley 29 not out, and Deavoll 38). Bowling, for Kaikoura, Trewin took three for 24, Hobbs four for 78, McLennan one for 9, and Comer one for 2. The result was a draw.

LOAN FOR PAVING ROADS

REPORT TO ELLESMERE COUNTY COUNCIL A letter was received by the Ellcsmer County Council, at its meeting on Monday, from the Main Highways Board, stating that it had agreed to advance to the council by way of loan for paving on the Sockburn-South-bridge highway, up to £2OOO, at 3i per cent., repayable in three equal instalments. The clerk reported that he had made application to the Treasury Department for authority to borrow. Another letter from the Main Highways Board stated that it had not been able to declare any further highways in the Ellesmere County. The council's estimates for maintenance had been approved. Advice from the Minister for Industries and Commerce (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan) was to the effect that he intended to introduce legislation granting exemption to local bodies from the regulations governing the fixing of the price of petrol. It Was decided to impose the 10 per cent, penalty on outstanding rates after March 12. BOY SCOUT CAMP RANGIORA TROOP AT * AMBERLEY Fifteen members of the Rangiora boy scout troop will leave to-day for their annua) camp, which will this year be held on the property of Mr E. S. Taylor, Glasnevin, Ambcrley. The scoutmaster (the Rev. J. A. F. Watson) and Mr G. W. Southgate, of Christchurch, will be in charge, and the boys will be away for about a week. WAIMAKARIRI BAR IN GOOD ORDER REPORT TO MEETING OF BOARD The chairman (Mr J. H. Mealings) presided at the monthly meeting of the Waimakariti Harbour Board. Other members present were Messrs R. F. Joyce, J. w. Barnard, and H. Rinaldi. The secretary of the Kaiapoi Re--1 gatta Committee wrote asking if the board would give financial assistance towards the 1938 regatta. A contribution of £1 Is was granted. The signalman reported that during the month the bar beacons had been shifted a few yards to the south. The river was still in good order. It was decided to continue the work being carried out by the board under the Government’s No. 13 scheme, and to make an application to the Labour Department for 15 men to be employed for a further term. The financial statement showed receipts since last meeting to be £525 Is 6d. There was a debit bank balance of £45 11s 6d. and accounts passed for payment amounted to £447 7s 84.

SWIMMING HORNBY AMATEUR CLUB COMMITTEE MEETING HELD At a meeting of the Hornby Amateur Swimming Club, Mr W. Moore (club captain) presided. It was agreed io give £1 Is to the centre s fund for the expenses of touring swimmers. It was decided that the Hornby branch of the Young Men’s Christian Association should be given the use of the baths on a Saturday afternoon. Because of the lack of senior club members, it was resolved to caned the inter-club carnival set down for February 12, A general meeting of the club members will be called for January 24 to organise a committee to conduct a bazaar later. The club was fortunate in being able to secure the help of two instructors during the “Learn-to-swim" week, when about 60 children, received their first instruction in swimming.
