SIX CERTAINTIES NAMED TWO CANTERBURY MEN INCLUDED FURTHER TRIALS TO BE HELD [From Our Own Reporter.] WELLINGTON. December 11. ’ Though official consideration has yet to be completed and several more trials are to be held, it can be assumed that at least six men are certainties for selection in the New Zealand athletic team for the British Empire Games in Sydney next February. These six are:— C. H. Matthews (Canterbury), three miles and one mile. • ’ V. P. Boot (Canterbury), half-mile q and one mile. S. A. Lay (West Coast, North Island), I! throwing the javelin, j! P, F. Sharpley (Hawke’s Bay), .120 I j yards hurdles, hj H. J. Tyrie (Otago), 440 yards, i G. C. Quinn (Hawke’s Bay), 100 yards I' and 220 yards. Until further trials are held it will Dot be possible to determine the next six or seven candidates who will find places in the team of approximately 12 or 13. H. D. Ball and F. A. Finlayson (Auckland) will be required to run a further trial over the 440 yards hurdles at Auckland on or before'next Saturday. A. T. Anderson (Canterbury) will be required to have a similar trial in Christchurch. W. A. C. Pullar (Otago), who did not appear at Saturday’s meeting, and T. Allen (Otago), who are candidates for the mile, will be required to run a

trial in Dunedin on or before next Saturday. In addition to the best of these men others most likely to receive consideration are: J. G. Leckie (Auckland), throwing the hammer: J. Morgan (West Coast, North Island), throwing the discus: and A. J. Sayers (Auckland), quar-ter-mile. Women Athletes Women athletes likely to be considered are:— D. Lumley (Auckland). 100 yds, B. Forbes (Otago), high jump. D. Straqhan (Canterbury), long jump and 100 yds. R. Tong (.Hawke’s Bay), 90 yards hurdles. E. Munro (Auckland), long jump and 90 yards hurdles. The New Zealand six miles trial will be held at Lower Hutt on Monday afternoon. It is likely that a marathon trial will be held at Napier in the Christmas holiday period. The prospects of selection among those athletes towards the end of the lists given above will depend on the size of the team to be sent away, which is in turn governed by financial considerations. Decision will be made as early as possible by the council of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, and the team will then come before the British Olympic and Empire Games Association for final acCBptsncG The New Zealand Empire Games team will leave for Sydney from Wellington on January 20.
