Yesterday the dirt track was in fine order, when the unusual spectacle of a novice easily taking sprint honours was recorded by Agnes Bingen. who “ as failed in about half-a-dozen starts. She ran a mile in 2min 16sec, stepping the last half brilliantly in Imin 2sec, a record for a maiden at Alexandra Park. Agnes Bingen is trained by Owen Jones, at one time a successful trainer in Otago. , Another bright effort was that of the three-year-old Blue Crest, who, m company with the more experienced Ranfurly Lass, worked a mile and a half in 3min 34sec, the half in Imm ° S Maunga Tangi, who looks a picture, and was assisted at stages by Argolis. Handicapper, and Luminate, reeled on the last half of two miles in Imm 4sec, the journey showing 4min 34sec. “ a P* dicapper ran the mile and a half 3min 24 2-ssec, the last half in Imm 4 2-ssec Another good effort was credited to the novice, Marcus, and Equipoise, who went 2min 53sec for 10 furlongs, the half in Imin 6sec. A Good Track Horse Kaitawa, Kewpie’s Triumph, and Frank Best went 2min 52sec, and the first-named returned the best half in Imin 6sec. Kaitawa is a great track horse, who does not race to form and is still in the maiden class. Sequoia attracted attention by beating Kewpie’s Crest in 3min 27sec, the last half in Imin 6 4-ssec. The unraced Truanan, half-brother to Tangaroa, shaped well with Fisher, running a mile in 2min 16 2-ssec, the final section in Imin 7 2-ssec. The Rowe trotting candidate, Young Rodney, went two miles solidly in 4mm 38sec, the second mile in 2min 17sec. The first arrivals, are the Wellsford horses, Bingen Sun and Star Gum,
