NOTES ON THE RACING [THE PRESS Special Service.] GREYMOUTH, December 12. Overdue Win Colonel Axworthy recorded an overdue success in the Burbury Handicap, when he scored an impressive victory. Kate Bingen was always the pacemaker, and in the early stages led Colonel Axworthy, and after five furlongs she ’was leader from Colonel Axworthy, Kay Francis, Eva Truman, Philario, Parrish Dillon, and Kingussie. Once heads were turned for home. Colonel Axworthy forged to the front and won comfortably by two lengths from Kate Bingen with Philario three lengths further back. Then came Silver Letitia. Kingussie, Eva Truman, and Parrish Dillon. An Easy Success The runners in the President’s Handicap, with the exception of the winner, save poor displays. Sonoma Boy turned round at the start and Civil Officer, a staunch favourite, failed to settle down, and Bold Author broke up. Tommy Guy was the early leader from Dilatory and Gentleman Joe, but broke going out of the straight in the flnql circuit, and Gentleman Joe took change to leave the field gradually behind and win wiith ease by 60 yards from Tommy Guy, with Sonoma Boy three lengths back. Dilatory was close up fourth. Stayed On Logan Palm indicated his ability to stay when he scored a most impressive victory in the McMahon Memorial, downing the favourite Slippery Sam with a wellsustained run from the entrance to the straight, after waiting on the leaders throughout. Lucess was the pacemaker to the straight entrance from Litle Gordon. Slippery Sam. Ace Pot, and Logan Palm. Ace Pot broke, ruining his chances at the home bend. Logan Palm, wide opt, drew away to win from Slippery Sam, with fast-finishing Ace Pot close up. Lucess was fourth. Railway Handicap Handily placed throughout just in behind the pacemakers. Stylish Boy and Bridget Borough. Chudic drew out in the straight to score in the Railway Handicap. Pukeurl failed to go away, whilst Gold Potts lost a lot of ground at the start and appeared to be hopelessly out of the contest, but a stylish exhibition of pacing over the last half-mile landed him within a length and a half of the winner. Bridget Borough paced an honest race into third place. The favourite. Three Bells, quickly made up his handicap, but failed to make an impression on the placed trio. Stylish Boy looked likely until he compounded 150 yards from home and gave up the lead to the winner. A Double Winner Although penalised 24 yards, Gentleman Joe proved a class above the other runners in the Stewards’ Handicap, winning with ease by 15 lengths from Tommy Guy with Dilatory third: Bold Author and Sonoma Boy failed to trot evenly and were well down the track at the finish. Gentleman Joe had his first outing at Rangiora recently. He Is a une-looking trotter, who when more solid, should prove an acquisition. Outclassed Field Colonel Axworthy completed an easy double when he soreadeagled the field In the Recovery Handicap after being well in the rear over the early stages. Kate Bingen was again the pacemaker, and with Philario and Kay Francis, were soon well clear of the remainder. Kate Bingen led into the straight from Philario, Colonel Axworthy. and Silver Letitia, but tired badlv in the run home, and although Philario issued strong challenges. Colonel Axworthy drew away over the last 50 yards from Philario with Silver Letitia handy. Kate Bingen and Kingussie were next. Improved Showing Ace Pot again got on the winning list when he won the Lawry Memorial Handicap in smart style. He w ® 3 tucked in behind the leaders, Lucess and Little Goidon. over the first five furlongs, and then took the lead to put in a break of several lengths on the field. Entering the straight, he was clear of Lucess, Whitstonc. Slippery Sam, Little Gordon, and Logan Palm, and went on to win handily fr°m Logan Palm, who finished full of dash from an almost hopeless position when he sot a run on the rails just to cut Whitstone out of second money. Lucess was fourth and Slippery Sam next. Slippery Sam. who was the favourite, lost valuable ground at the start. Farewell Handicap Gold Potts and Pukeurt were slow to move off in the Farewell Handicap. Colonel Axworthy was the first to show out from Nahlln, but passing the stand. Nahlin was the leader from Colonel Axworthv. Bridget Borough, Stylish Boy. Three Bells, Pukeurl, and Lady Ann. Nahlin broke at the straight entrance and Colonel Axworthy again took charge to lead into the straight from Bridget Borough. Stylish Boy. Chudic, and Nahlin. Colonel Axworthy won without pressure by two lengths from Bridget Borough, with Stylish Boy a length away third. Chudic was fourth, followed by Lady Ann and Pukeuri.
