WAGES OF RAILWAYS EMPLOYEES
♦ PAYMENT BEFORE CHRISTMAS SOUGHT (From Our Parliamentary Reporter] WELLINGTON, December 8. A request that railways employees whose fortnightly pay-day falls on December 30 should receive their pay earlier, px*efcrably on Christmas Eve, was made by Mr J. A. Roy (National, Clutha) In an urgent question to the Minister for Railways (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan) in the House of Representatives to-day. , , , “The department has arranged to pay all employees going on leave, such as workshops employees, etc., before Christmas.” the Minister replied, but for employees in the traffic, locomotive, and permanent way branches who will be working on the days between Christmas and the New Year it will not be practicable to make payment before due date. The payment before Christmas will also be made to relief workers engaged on works under the jurisdiction of the Railways Department.” .
