BUSES IN THE SQUARE
TO THE EDITOR Ol* THE PRESS. Sir, —The Christchurch City Council is to be congratulated on the one-way traffic regulation which it is using in Cathedral square. It is. however, regrettable that the Christchurch Tramway Board is not co-operating. “The Press” reports to-day that the board asserts that to include Us Diesel buses in the one-way system would mean the purchase of another bus at a cost of £3OOO, the reason given being extra time required for a circuit of the west side of the Square. I do not think that the extra time would be more than 60 seconds. An examination of the time-table shows that with the exception of five trips out of more than 80, there is sufficient spare time at the outside terminals to allow for much more than the few additional seconds required in the Square. The additional time would not be needed for the journeys into town, because these buses are already in the right traffic flow. , _ ... A bus service is much more flexible than a tram service, which has to use loops and drop time waiting in them; and I am sure that the board’s traffic organisers arc quite capable of making the necessary adjustments. Another point is that, if the eastern buses on the outward journey were required to pass round the west side of the Square, they would pick up their passengers at the Beresford corner where there is verandah shelter for them; and this, too, would be a convenience for the cast people who want to shop north of the Square.—Yours, etc FOR TRAFFIC IMPROVEMENT.
