THE BRITISH ARMY
Younger Leaders Chosen
In the last few years considerable efforts have been made to bring the British Army to date. Six months ago Mr L. HoreBelisha, formerly Minister for Transport, was appointed Minister for War, and since then he has made a considerable effort to bring recruits to the Army by improving the conditions of service. The latest move, announced this week, is the replacement of three of the older members of the Army Council—the controlling body of the Army—by younger men. One of the most important changes is the appointment of Major-General Viscount Gort to the council. Viscount Gort was 1 the only member of the peerage to gain the Victoria Cross during the Great War, and his vigorous personality has won him the nickname of “Tiger.”
Estates in Ireland The Earl of Harewood has decided to maintain his estates in Ireland no longer. Thus the last personal link between the Irish Free State and the Earl of Harewood, husband of the Princess Royal, will be broken. His estates were at Loughrea, County Galway. He inherited them from Earl Clanricarde. Library Destroyed A fire in the Brisbane Public Library destroyed irreplaceable historic documents and books valued at thousands of pounds. Firemen saved the Oxley Memorial Library in the same building. England’s Oldest Woman The King has returned to London after a tour of the Duchy of Cornwall estates in the West Country. At Curry Malet, Cornwall, His Majesty met England’s oldest woman, Mrs Emma Coat, aged 107.
