ADDINGTON MARKET

STORE EWE PRICES IMPROVE

LAMBS FALL SHARPLY A fall of about 3s a head in the price of fat lambs was the most interesting development at the weekly stock sale at Addington yesterday. The export schedule has come down from 9d to BJd. but the fall in the price was a good deal more than the schedule reduction. The offering was iarger than that forward last week, and contained a relatively small proportion of really good lambs. Entries in the fat sheep and fat cattle sections were heavy. Fat cattle, owing to the warmer weather and to the reduction in the price of lamb, were cheaper, but fat sheep were firm, the best ewes and wethers being slightly dearer. Store ewes and lambs met a good sale with an increase of about Is 6d a head in price. STORE SHEEP A moderate entry of store sheep came forward, with nothing outstanding in the way of quality. Ewes and lambs met a distinctly better market, and rose in price by about Is 6d a head. The feed situation has improved over a great deal of Canterbury, and buyers were cheered to learn of the improvement in wool at tire Wellington sale. The most interesting entry was a line of about 1000 ewes and lambs sent up from one of the parched districts of North Otago. They were well-bred sheep, Corriedales, with sound mouths, but were showing the effects of the drought. They were sold out of the wool and averaged about 16s 6d. The lambs particularly showed signs of the scarcity of feed.

The wethers offered were an ordinary lot, and sold at about the same level of prices as that ruling last week. There appeared to be a rather better inquiry for wethers. Sales were;—

Ewes and Lambs—Fifty-five two-tooth ewes and lambs at 20s Sd, 98 failing-mouth ewes and lambs at 13s '2d, 52 failing-mouth ewes and lambs at 12s 9d, 62 failing-mouth ewes and lambs at 14s 2d. 11l ewes and lambs at 13s Id. 114 ewes and lambs at 12s 3d, 112 ewes and lambs at Ils 6d, 82 eight-tooth ewes and 93 lambs at 17s, 80 eight-tooth ewes and 86 lambs at 16s 3d, 82 eight-tooth ewes and 99 lambs at 16s 3d, 43 ewes and lambs at 17s 3d. 195 old ewes and lambs at 18s 6d.

Ewes—Seventy two-tooth at 23s lOd, 68 five-year-old at 18s. Wethers—Seventy-two at 20s. Hoggets—Sixty-eight ewe at 25s lOd, 52 wether at 18s, FAT LAMBS The decrease in the freezing schedule of a halfpenny to BJd for under 36s had an immediate effect In the fat lamb sale, where values were down by 2s 6d to 3s a head. The yarding was rather heavier than that forward" last week, and though there were a number of good lines forward. the quality was generally ordinary, a large number of light, hard-looking lambs being included. The sale was definitely weaker from the outset, and values ranged from 7Jd to 9d per lb, as against as high as lOd last week. Competition for the best was keen, and all sorts met a fair inquiry at the lower rates. Top price was 31s 7d for the top pen of a line of 31 sold on account of E. McCarthy (Prebbleton). H. Matson and Company sold: — On account of T. Barker (New Brighton), 10 at 26s 4d to 31s Id: A. Petrie (Sefton), 4 at 26s 7d to 29s lOd; S. Coleman (West Melton). 9 at 26s 4d to 29s 9d; A. (Southbridge), 21 at 23s to 25s 7d; client, 42 at 23s lOd to 25s 4d; Smack Bros. (Irwell), 4 at 255. FAT SHEEP The entry of fat sheep was about 5100 against 4300 last week, and was generally of indifferent quality. A scarcity of first-class butchers’ ewes and wethers kept this type dear, wethers showing, if anything, a slight appreciation. The beat ewes, too, were fully firm. Freezing buyers for the first time this season were operating freely in the ewe pens, and their bidding kept the price from slipping. Exporters also look a good number of wethers. Prices for the lighter sorts were about on a par with those of last week.

Top price for wethers was 32s Id. paid for 10 sold on account of the Somerton Estate. Ewes made to 28s 4d, at which price seven were sold on account of a client. Values wore:— Extra prime heavy wethers, to 32s Id. Prime heavy w'ethers, 28s to 31s. Prime medium-weight wethers, 26s to 28s. Ordinary wethers, 22s Gd to 25s 6d. Light wethers, to 225. FAT CATTLE The fat cattle entry was 560 head, against 520 last week, and was as usual of mixed quality. The hot weather and the decline in the price of lamb has checked the demand for beef, and prices all round were easier. Ileavv bullocks \\cic £1 a head lower ‘than they wore last week, and medium steers were also easier, though not to the same extent. The sale for tliis class was erratic, bidding being keen for good quality which sold at only a slight recession from the rates of last week. Other medium-weights were up to 10s a head cheaper, though good heifers were firm. Cows, where quality was shown, were about on a par with ia>t week, but for the large quantity of unattractive cow beef, there was a very slack demand with values most erratic. Top price was £l7 2a 6d for one steer sold on account of C. S. Lyall (Pigeon Bav). Heifers made to £l3 7s (Id, that price being received for a splendid pen of four sold on account of J. Kennedy (Rangiora), and cows made to £l2 7s 6d, which was received for one sold on account of J. Coop (Kaituna). Best beef made to 40s per 1001 b, 2nd in cases slightly more. Average beef made from 35s to 395, secondary and inferior 25s to 30s, and some down to below 20s.

' Of this lino, 43 were Polled Angus-Hereford cross of high quality, the prices ranging from £6 15s to £8 12s Gd. The rest were Herefords and Shorthorn cross. DAIRY CATTLE There was a short entry in the dairy cattle section, with a limited number of good cows on offer.
