MERRY MATHEW
A CHAMPION COLT f RUE TYPE OF ENGLISH THOROUGHBRED Merry Mathew, whose photograph is reproduced on this page, is a three-year-old colt by Truculent from Sparkling Eyes by Young Pegasus, and is owned by Mr Roger Bownass, of "Windermere. He is described as the best three-year-old in the world, and an offer by Mr Sol Green, of Australia. of 10,000 guineas was refused for him after he won the Great Northern Stakes at York in October. Since then he won the Newmarket St. Leger worth £1025, beating Cold Scent, second in the Derby, and Sandsprite. Unfortunately, Merry Mathew was not entered for the Derby, and the claim that he was the best of his age m England could not be proved until he met Mid-day Sun. the Derby winner. To give Merry Mathew the opportunity to meet others of his age, the Liverpool Race Company made a special race called the Aintree Derby, of £2OOO, which was decided on November 10; but the result has not been cabled. In a letter to an old friend, Mr J. Hewett, of the Russley Golt Links, Mr Bownass said he paid 850 guineas for Merry Matnew 18 months ago, and would sell him, but considered he was worth more than the figure offered by Mr Green, who hoped to get him for next year’s Melbourne Cup. Mr Bownass also owns Young England, considered to be the best four-year-old in England. Young England is a bay colt by Achtoi from Fly Maid by Argosy, and Mr Bownass recently I sold him to go to the stud.
