WOMEN’S TEMPERANCE UNION

DISTRICT EXECUTIVE MEETS The North Canterbury District Executive of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union met in the Women’s Christian Temperance Union rooms. Mrs Hall presided over an attendance of 23 from adult branches. Votes of sympathy were passed with Mrs W. H. Robinson, president of the South Canterbury District Executive, and with the relatives of Mrs McKechnie, of Rangiora. Correspondence from the Hon. P. Fraser in answer to a letter from the executive regarding the appointment of women police, was read. Mrs Whyte, in reporting on visits paid to lonely patients in the mental hospital during the month, asked for contributions towards small Christmas gifts ’ and the new year social evening at the women’s reformatory. Further arrangements were made and committees appointed to arrange a garden party to be held in February. A further grant of £2 was given to Mrs Lowry for the purchase of literature. The next executive meeting will be held in February. SYDENHAM BRANCH At the annual meeting of the Sydenham branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union Mrs Lowry presided. Mrs Davies led the devotions and Mrs Middleton gave the temperance fact The annual reports of the secretary, treasurer, and philanthropic, white ribbon and cradle roll superintendents were read and adopted. Mrs Fraser <senior member) was presented wtih a bouquet in honour of her eighty-fourth birthday.

The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: —President, Mrs J. K. Archer; vice-presidents, Mesdames Fraser, Webb, Davies, and Welsh; secretary, Mrs Drewett; treasurer, Mrs Hutton; evangelistic superintendent and social convener, Mrs Davies; scientific temperance fact and notable days superintendent, Mrs Weatherhead; cradle roll superintendent, Mrs Filer; “White Ribbon” superintendent, Mrs E. Rogers; philanthropic superintendent, musical convener and pianist, Mrs Woodward; press reporter, Mrs Brown. A vote of thanks was passed to Mrs Lowry for presiding.
