PURCHASE OF A NEW POWER GRADER Advice that the Main Highways Board had agreed to purchase a power grader on behalf of the council, under a hire purchase agreement, was received at a meeting of the Geraldine County Council yesterday, from Mr F. Langbein, the board's representative in Canterbury. It was decided to make a grant of £lO to the Temuka Technical Association in response to an application from the acting-director (Mr J. C. Hay hurst). Mr Hayhurst reported that last year 18 pupils had enrolled for wool-class-ing, 15 for dressmaking and nine for blade shearing. A narrow bridge at Clarke's creek was the subject of a letter from Mr W. Walker. Tripp Settlement, Woodbury. There had been numerous complaints about the bridge, which was too narrow for cream lorries, he stated. The ford was not satisfactory, and even if it were attended to. it would be washed away after the first rain. The bridge was dangerous, and widening and the erection of sides were necessary. On the suggestion of Mr J. Kerr, countv foreman, it was decided to shift Lysaght's bridge on the RaukapukaOrari road to Clarke's creek as soon as the culverts were put in on the highway at Lysasht's. That there was a debit balance of £7728 as compared with £6129 Is 2d at the same time last year, was disclosed in the financial report presented bv Mr F. R. Flatman. Receipts during the month totalled £lOOl 15s 9d. he said. The sum of £954 4s 9d had been received for the current year's rates out of a total levy of £13.516 Highways subsidies were due before the end of the year, which should bring the overdraft down to normal

G Tait. who said that "Padre" Williams had taken a keen interest in the affairs of the club for the last three years, and had proved himself to be a valuablr helper and a constructive critic Tributes to Mr Williams were alse paid by Messrs W S. Young and P. D. Laurie. "When I was in the States I used to be a preat defender of England and her policy." said Mr Williams. "When I return I shall be only too pleased to interpret New Zealand to the people of the States." NOVEMBER WEATHER ST. ANDREWS Compared with the same period last year the total rainfall for the 11 months this year shows a decrease of 7.06 inches. During November 1.07 inches fell in St. Andrews on four days, as follows:—November 17, 65 points; November 18. 7 points; November 19, 31 points; November 24, 4 points. The November total last year was 3.73 inches. Yearly totals to date are: 1937, 17.97 inches; 1936, 25.03 inches. SCHOOL AFFAIRS AT GLENAVY Arrangements for the presentation of prizes on December 16, were completed at a meeting of the Glenavy School Committee. The children will compete in sports and afternoon tea will be provided for the parents. The Glenavy Women's Institute will be invited. Early in February a combined picnic with Kurow will be held in Timaru.

Fifty-three certificates of naturalisation in New Zealand were gazetted last week. They include persons born in Poland. Italy, Jugoslavia, France, Russia, Germany, Hungary, Finland. Sweden, Switzerland, U.S.A., Palestine, Norway, Greece, Denmark, and a Christchurch bootmaker, who was born at sea.
