ALLEGATIONS OF NEGLECT
Treatment Of Blaketown "FAVOURING OTHER PARTS OF TOWN" Allegations that the suburb of Blaketown was being neglected by the Borough Council, in favour of other parts of the town, were made at a meeting of the Blaketown and Preston Road Ratepayers' Association on Sunday night, following the receipt of a letter from the council saying that matters brought before it by a deputation from the association some time ago had been referred to the borough engineer for a report. None of the work asked for had been done, said Mr J. Efford. He referred to the approach to the beach safety zone, and said that it was in a dangerous condition. They had not yet seen a report from the engineer, said Mr A. Alderton. The traffic bridge to Blaketown was dangerous, and there was also the matter of the "frog ponds." He criticised the decision of the Borough Council to connect Mr McLuskie's new house on the hill above Puketahi street to the sewerage system, and improve the road access. In Blaketown there were numerous bungalows which had been erected years ago, but there were no footpaths in front of them. The ratepayers at Blaketown were paying their rates, but were not receiving service from the council, which was spending money in other parts of the borough. The way in which the ratepayers' money was being used was a disgrace. The proposed extension of the sewerage to Blaketown was discussed, and ratepayers were requested to support the loan proposal.
