ENGLISH ESTATES

IN IRELAND

Property Given Up By Earl of Harewood

“LAST LINK WITH ROYAL

FAMILY”

(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT.)

(Received December 5, 8.30 p.m.)

LONDON, December 5,

The “Sunday Graphic” Tsays the last personal link between the Irish Free State and the Royal Family is being severed by the Earl of Harewood’s decision no longer to maintain his estates at Loughrea, County Galway, inherited from Earl Clanricarde.

A cable message from Dublin on November 8 reported that an infernal machine partly wrecked the rent office at Loughrea, where the Earl of Harewood’s agent was due the following day to collect the quarterly rents from tenants. The Earl of Harewood made a generous offer to tenants, cancelling the rent arrears and providing for an 11-year purchase scheme. This surprised the Irish Leaseholders’ Association, who, advising a demand for a seven-year scheme, delayed negotiations for a long time. The Earl of Harewood’s action in cancelling the rent arrears is believed to involve thousands of pounds, and it is expected it will cancel the rent summonses returnable on December 21.
