MEMORIAL TO THE LATE MISS WOOLLCOMBE
“The parishioners of All Saints, Waimataitai, in the new cure of Highfield, Timaru, now rejoice in the possession of a fine piece of carving,” states the “Church News.” It is executed by Mr F. G. Gurnsey, for the friends and admirers of the late Katherine Woollcombe as a memorial of her work for the Church, and for All Saints in particular. It is a beautiful reredos for the altar. Miss Woollcombe was one of the most remarkable workers for the Church in South Canterbury, said the Rev. Trevor Williams, in an address when the reredos was dedicated on All Saints’ Day. “For 59 years she had taught Sunday school in Timaru, and it was she who persuaded the vicar to rent the building for church purposes before it was bought. She had done much to furnish it and lavish care upon its upkeep. In every work for the Church and its members she gave enthusiastic personal support, visiting the sick and the poor, teaching the tiny children, working for the adornment of St. Mary’s and All Saints, and supporting the orphanage.”
