CATHOLIC BOYS' SCHOOL

NEW BUILDING AT TIMARU OPENING OF SECONDARY ESTABLISHMENT "I am looking forward to this school being a feeder to St. Bede's College, Christchurch, where the boys may go for the completion of their education," said Bishop Brodie yesterday afternoon, at the dedication of the new Roman Catholic boys' high school in the presence of a large gathering of clergy and the public, at Timaru. Among those with Bishop Brodie on the steps of the new building, where the ceremony took place, were the Very Rev. Father D. Hurley, S.M., Provincial of the Society of Mary, the Very Rev. Father P. J. Smyth, parish priest at Timaru, the Rev. Father L. Smith, S.M.. the headmaster of the new school, the Very Rev. Father M. J. Dowling, S.M., of St Bede's College, the Very Rev. Dr. V. Geaney, S.M.. and the Very Rev. Dr. C. Casey, S.M. Bishop Brodie said that the ceremonies of that afternoon were of great importr.n-.-o. The world to-day was pc sing through anxious times, arid even the most virtuous were being put on trial to test their virtue and their faith. There was a tendency in the Dominion, as in other parts of the world, to increase the school age. There were poor Catholic parents who desired their children to go out to work as soon as possible to assist in the support of the home, but tfee Church believed fh the necessity of their young people extending their education, and would do what it could to assist in that direction. Father Hurley congratulated the Catholics of Timaru on the acquisition of such a building, stating that it represented a dream come true He paid a tribute to the work of those associated with the Timaru Boys' High School, but stated that the objects of the two schools were entirely different. The school, which stands in the grounds at the rear of the Church of the Sacred Heart, consists of two classrooms, each 24ft by 20ft. a fullyequipped science room, 28ft by 22ft, a headmaster's office, and a store room. Provision has been made for the addition of further classrooms when ! necessary.
