PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
MODERATOR-DESIGNATE
MISSION WORKER IN INDIA
APPOINTED
(PBESS ASSOCU.TXOH TBLEGEAM.)
AUCKLAND, November 13,
By unanimous vote, the Rev. Thomas Ewart Riddle, of the Punjab, India, was to-day appointed Moder-ator-designate by the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand. Other nominations in" favour of the Rev. J. Davie, the Rev. G. H. Jupp, the Rev. H. Davies, and the Rev. J. Paterson were withdrawn in favour of Mr Riddle.
In moving the appointment, the Rev. J. A. Thomson said that Mr Riddle was ordained in 1903, and began work in the Punjab in 1912. He had given wonderful service to the Church, and no one had done greater service in the Indian mission field. During the Great War he had served as a chaplain to Indian troops and contracted a severe illness which almost cost him his life. He would be returning on furlough next year. Mr Thomson said that he thought it would be fitting to call him to the Church as Moderator. It would dignify the office and do a great deal to improve missionary effort, a crying need to-day. The motion was seconded by the Rev. G. H. Jupp, who paid a tribute to Mr Riddle's great work on the mission field.
The Assembly decided that next year's Assembly would be held in Dunedin.
A scheme to raise £300,000 in recognition of the centenary of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand was presented to the Assembly to-day by the Centenary Fund Committee, the convener of which is Mr S. J. Harbutt, of Auckland. The report stated that in the event of the objective being achieved, £200,000 would go to liquidate the debts of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand, £50,000 would be devoted to work in the home, foreign, and Maori mission fields, £25,000 to the beneficiary fund, and £25,000 for the special centenary fund, to be used for sites for buildings. The report stated that the Presbyterian Church had a membership representing 25 per cent, of the population of New Zealand. The report was received.
