PLEASANT WEATHER AND GOOD RACING

VICE-ROYALTY ATTENDS

Good racing, pleasant weather and a holiday spirit amongst the crowd, combined to make Derby Day, the second day of the Canterbury J<pckey Club’s metropolitan meeting at Riccarton yesterday a great success and to add to the club’s good fortune, the meeting was honoured by the presence of their Excellencies the GovernorGeneral, Viscount Galway and Viscountess Galway* who, with their party, arrived before the second race. Lady Galway wore a navy wool georgette suit with three-quarter length coat jumper of navy silk patterned with lime green, spray of lime green orchids and close-fitting navy straw hat with upturned brim of tucked taffeta. Mrs Purvis, who. with Major Arthur Purvis, accompanied their Excellencies, wore a pimento coat with brown buttons over a brown frock and her brown straw hat had the brim upturned. , . .. Mrs Arthur Elworthy, wife of the chairman, wore an ensemble of havana brown cordelaide, tho frock finished with green buckles at the neckline and ■ a green and brown sash, green straw hat. Mrs George Gould wore a redmgote of navy, white, and red conventionally patterned crepe over a navy frock, and her upturned navy straw hat had a quill at one side. Mrs J. Mowbray Tripp wore a white silk crepe ensemble, lightly patterned all over in black. Her black Breton sailor hat had a cire bow under the brim. Many Visitors Mrs David Bush, who was with her hostess, Miss Olive Mcllraith, wore a navy ensemble, with a crisp white bow at the neck, and wide navy, hat; Mrs George Hennessy, just returned from England, wore a brown ensemble and small brown hat with touches of white; Mrs lan Murchison, of Lake Coleridge, was accompanied by her sister. Miss Hazel Nolan; Mrs Brewer and Miss Brewer, of Dunedin, were with Mrs Arthur Sims, who wore a navy crepe ensemble trimmed with Richelieu embroidery, and her navy hat trimmed with cire ribbon and an eye-veil; Mrs Hector Smith, who is president of the Napier Golf Club,- was being greeted by many who attended the Dominion golf tournament on the Waiohlkl links. She wore a navy and white patterned silk crepe frock, and navy hat with pastel pink velvet flower. With her was Mrs Troutbeck, of Napier. Miss Eileen Hegarty, of Gisborne, wore a navy wool crepe frock with short cape and white pointed revers, and a small navy hat with bow in front. From Dunedin had come Miss K. Greenslade, who wore a black tailored frock and small black velvet hat. Other visitors were Mrs T. H. Lowry (Hawke’s Bay), Mrs W. Duncan and Miss Mary Weld. who accompanied her hostess, Mrs Bruce Douglas, Miss Bray, of Wellington, wore a rust coloured suit and hat to match, and Miss Joyce Nathan wore a mauve skirt and pervenche blue blouse, coat and hat. Mrs H. L. Widdowson (Wanganui), wearing a navy suit and white hat, was with her hostess. Mrs Aylmer Vivian, who wore a surf green suit and brown blouse and hat. Local Winners There was great excitement in the grandstand when the local horse. Royal Chief, won the Derby Stakes, the most Important race of the day, and congratulations were showered on the owner, Mr A. K. Firth, and Mrs Firth. Mrs Firth wore a navy and white patterned frock, a navy scalloped coat, and a navy hat trimmed with tiny white birds. Miss Nora Firth wore a white silk crepe frock patterned in black and green, black coat, and black breton sailor hat. Miss Judith Firth wore a turquoise blue jacket suit and navy hat. In their box close by, Mr and Mrs Harold Greenwood were also receiving congratulations on the success of their horse. Defaulter, in the Irwell Handicap. FOOTBALL CLUB’S DANCE

‘ A large number of holiday visitors gathered in the Prebbleton Hall for the dance arranged hy the Rughy Poothall Club.

• Mr D, Port and partner were the winners of a Monte Cado dance, and

other competitions were won by Mesdames A. Tomson and H. Hoff, Messrs C. Chesmir and W. Downey. Dance music was supplied by Les. Kinsman’s orchestra, with extras by Mr G. Rutherford- Mr J. Smith was master of ceremonies.

A "gift" social in aid of the Christmas gift stall for the forthcoming Presbyterian garden party at Culverden was held at the home of Mrs Ewart R. Wright, “Swindon.” Culverden.
