NAVAL OFFICERS

WELCOMED DISTINGUISHED GUESTS Much hospitality has been dispensed in the past by the Canterbury (New Zealand) branch of the Navy League,

and one of the pleasantest gatherings it has arranged was a sherry party, held yesterday in the Navy League Hall, Gloucester street, in honour of the officers of H.M.S. Achilles and H.M.S. Leander. which are at present in Lyttelton. Only members of the league were invited to meet the visitors, and the committee was unable to extend invitations to many others who wished to attend. A sherry party was an innovation for the league, and it was successfully organised by Commander A. D. Boyle, Commander H. A. Rhind, Commander C. H. Kersley, Colonel James Murphy, Mrs H. Wyatt, chairwoman of the women’s auxiliary. Miss A. Bowker, Mesdames E. G. McCullough. J. Murphy, Clark-Scott, A. E. Young, Miss Mary Morten, and the general committee of the league. AFTERNOON PARTY

Mrs B. A. Froslick was hostess at an afternon party held in Beath’s grey room in honour of Miss Zona Rodie, whose marriage will take place shortly. Mrs Millar (Lagmhor, Ashburton), who is visiting Christchurch for Carnival Week, is staying with her daughter, Mrs Courtney Smith, Barrington street. Miss Gwenyth Baseby (Mannum, South Australia) arrived in Christchurch last evening after a tour of Mount Cook and the Southern Lakes districts. Miss Baseby, who is a guest at the Federal Hotel, will spend the week-end in Christchurch and will leave for Wellington on Monday evening to join the Awatea en route for Sydney.

Miss S. Robinson, who has been visiting Mrs W. McKechnie (Maori Hill), is now the guest of Mr Justice Kennedy and Mrs Kennedy, Dunedin.

Miss Bennett (Wellington) will be the guest of Mrs G. Robbie (Carrington street, St. Albans) during Carnival Week. Misses June and Frances Mowat (Blenheim), are visiting Mrs George Sage, Governor’s Bay. Miss Betty Trewin (Gracefield avenue), who has been visiting Miss Mary Reeves (Dunedin) and Miss Joan Harper (Grassy Hills, Waimate), has returned to Christchurch. Miss Harper will be Miss Trewin’s guest during race week. The Canterbury Jockey Club’s ball is always one of the most brilliant events in the social calendar of Christchurch. This year’s gathering, to be held in the Winter Garden on Thursday, November 11, will have the added distinction of numbering amongst its honoured guests RearAdmiral the Hon. E. R. Drummond, Captain and Mrs I. G. Glennie, and Captain and Mrs J. W. RivettCarnac, and officers of H.M.S. Achilles and H.M.S. Leander. Tickets for the ball may be bought at the United Service and Warner’s Hotels.

Many requests for tickets for Titania’s ball in aid of crippled children are being received from the country, and city residents and visitors are advised to obtain tickets as soon as possible from any member of the committee —Mr Gerald Anderson, Mesdames G. Rattray, and J. G. D. Ward—or from the leading hotels. The ball will be held in the Winter Garden on Friday, November 12, ShowNight. Final arrangements for the Cup Week ball to be held at the Winter Garden on Tuesday have been made by the organising committee, which comprises Mesdames Marmaduke Bethell, E. J, Cordner, Francis, F.
