When I was staying at Governor’s Bay, a car was stolen from Christchurch. One evening daddy and I were going for a walk towards Allandale, when a boy in a big black car, with a box on the back came racing along, flying up the hill and round the corner, out of sight. I was very suspicious, so, when I found I had my little notebook under my jersey. I took the number of his number-plate. When we came back from our walk the car was facing the road, and no one was near it.

The next day I was up at the store at Governor's Bay when a policeman and a detective came along with the car. I had all about the boy and the car down in my notebook, so I just gave it to him. He copied it down, took my name and address, shook hands, and was
