OBITUARY

MRS B. M»CLINTOCK

The death occurred this week of Mrs Ellen McClintock, widow of Mr Josiah McClintock, and the oldest resident of Prebbleton. Mrs McClintock, who was born in Adelaide in 1854. was the daughter of Mr and Mrs James Streeter, originally of Hunton, Kent, England. In 1838 Mr and Mrs Streeter brought their family of 10 young children to New Zealand, settling first at Kennedy’s Bush, but removing later to Greenpark. Shortly afterwards the family went to Prebbleton, where the permanent home was made, and agricultural pursuits followed. The marriage of Mr and Mrs McClintock was celebrated at St, Andrew’s Church, Christchurch, by the Rev. C. Fraser. Mrs McClintock was always deeply interested in social matters in the district and took an active part in church work, her particular interest being in the first brass band ever formed in Prebbleton under the direction of Mr “Gypsy” Smith. For these organisations she worked with other early residents untiringly until failing health compelled her retirement from active pursuits. As recently as 1933, Mrs McClintock took part in the reunion celebrations of the Prebbleton School, of which she was one of the earliest pupils. On her eighty-third birthday anniversary in April last, she was able to relate to a reporter of “The Press” some of her interesting experiences in the days of the pioneers. Her husband predeceased her 22 years ago, and she leaves a family of eight children. The sons are Mr W. J. McClintock (Gore Bay), Mr J. W. McClintock (Christchurch), and Messrs G. W„ J. J., and J. A. McClintock (Prebbleton), and the daughters, Mesdames W. J. Bradley (Palmerston North), L. Long (Awanui), and H. Easton (Auckland). There are- 37 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
