SOCIAL GATHERING
The Christchurch branch of the New Zealand Federation of University Women held its last meeting of the year in the Students* Union building last night, when members met at a pleasant social gathering. Songs were sun« by Mrs W. D. Ledsham, for whom Miss B. Cameron was accompanist, and piano solos were played by Miss Bessie Pollard. Those present were Mesdames B. C Penney T. E. Bowes. Arthur Barrel! LADIES’ AUXILIARY
RETURNED SOLDIERS’ ASSOCIATION
Officers elected at the annual meeting of the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Returned Soldiers’ Association were:— Patron, Lady Galway; president, Mrs George Gould; chairman, Mrs H. T. J. Thacker; vice-president, Miss A. Bowker; secretary and treasurer, Miss E. M. Cuthbert; assistant secretary and treasurer, Mrs W. H. Smith; honorary auditor, Mr Ross Moody; committee, Mesdames E. Davies, G. T. Baker, C. J. Treleaven, L. J. Lewis, H. A. Bishop, J. H. Irvine, A. H. Parfitt, W. S. Bean, O. W. Williams Misses M. Brown, C. Rogers, A. M. Cuthbert, A. Bowker, E. Orchard, R. E. Papprill, and A. L. Papprill. Mrs Thacker thanked the members for their help during the year, and the secretary read a report of the year’s activities. A credit balance of £lll 14s was reported by Miss Cuthbert. It was decided to continue to hold functions similar to those held last year. Arrangements were made for the twenty-first anniversary celebrations Of the Returned Soldiers’ Association to be held next week.
HOSPITAL LADY VISITORS’ ASSOCIATION
MEETING OF COMMITTEE
Mrs E. G. Hogg presided at a meeting of the committee of the Hospital Lady Visitors’ Association, held in the Christchurch Public Hospital. Others present were Mesdames S. H. Stewart, P. Cox, R. Beals, J. E. Fleming,. P. Wynn-Williams, Misses G. Widdowson, E. Cardale, and L. Bowen. The sub-committee report stated that during October 22 patients had been granted one week at the Rtmdes Convalescent Home, and 13 patients had been granted two weeks. Garments had been given to needy patients, and one child had been granted two weeks at the Cholmondeley Home. Miss M. Lance reported that 19 patients were engaged in occupational ■work, three patients had left, and four new patients had commenced handwork. It was hoped to have a competition for children doing this work some time in November. Gifts of books and magazines for the library had been gratefully received from Mrs Webb, Mrs J. F. Taylor. Mrs E A. Summers. Mrs A, Freeman, Miss Kincaid, and the McLean Institute. , Accounts amounting to £44 7s 5d were passed for payment. Grants of money to be expended on Christmas presents for the wards were made to Mrs Fleming and Mrs Stewart, and to Miss Widdowson for the children’s ward. Arrangements were made for the sale of flowers and patients’ work next month.
CUP WEEK BALL
The committee in charge of the arrangements for the Cup Week ball, Mesdames M. Bethell, E. J. Cordner, J. F. Cracroft Wilson. F. L. Scott, H. Wales, J. G. L. Vernon, Misses Peggy Acton-Adams, Anne Cooper, Nora Firth, Kathleen Newton, Joan Preston, Lyndsey Thompson, Janet Cooke, Rose Hutton, Anne Morrow, Messrs H. G. Livingstone (chairman), F. G. Bristed, Eric Million, Owen Johnston, Rex Morrow, and A. G. S. Gibbs (honorary secretary), met yesterday to complete arrangements for the gathering. It was reported that supper would be served in a marquee on the lawn, and that the scheme of decoration would include rearrangement of the lighting and provision of new shades. It was deeded that programmes be not issued. 1
