His Excellency Lord Galway has advised the committee of Titania*s ball for crippled children that he will be pleased to attend the ball to be held in the Winter Garden on Friday, November 12. Sir R. Heaton Rhodes and Miss V. Hynes (“Otahuna,” Tai Tapu), who are at present in Wellington, will return home to-morrow morning. Sir James and Lady Elliott, Wellington, will arrive in Christchurch on Saturday morning, and will be guests at “Otahuna” for the races. Lieutenant-Commander Vereker, of H.M.S. Leander, and Mrs Vereker will arrive in Christchurch to-mor-row and will be the guests of Mrs George Gould, “Avonbank,” Fendalton.

Miss L. Cunninghame (Auckland), who will be a visitor to Christchurch for the Royds-Blank wedding, will arrive in Christchurch this morning, and will be the guest of Mrs A. R. Blank, Fendalton. At the Federation of University Women’s rooms Miss G. M. Glanville gave the members of the Christchurch Business and Professional Women’s Club an entertaining review of Dr. Cronin’s latest novel, “The Citadel.” After the address supper was served.

Cabled advice has been received in Wellington that Miss Ann Farey, formerly of Wellington, and now in London, has gained her British Floral Art Diploma. Miss Farey has been studying floral art in London for the last 15 months, and is at present working in the Phibian Florist shop, Dorchester Hotel, Park Lane. She recently gave an exhibition at the Florists’ Telegraph Delivery Association at Scarborough. Miss Farey hopes to return to_ New Zealand via Europe and America. “I have seen wonderful changes take place in Italy during the 29 years I have lived in Rome, ’ said Miss C. A. Palmer, who arrived in Sydney by the Esquilino last week. Miss Palmer is on her way to New Zealand to visit her relations, and will leave by the Awatea to-mor-row. “I wouldn’t live anywhere else in the world than in Rome,” she added. “It is the most beautiful city, and in recent years Italy has been amazingly improved. Tourists are pouring in, and are very well treated. Italy and Britain are necessary to one another, and must be friends.”

Mr A. Bennett, Mr E. Bennett, and Mr A. C. King were the first prizewinners at the Young Women’s Christian Association weekly flag 500 drive, held last night, in the clubrooms. Second prizes were won by Mrs Templeton, Mr Rennie, and Mr Cook, and third prizes by Mr Pullan, Mr S. White, and Mr J. Kirk. Mr C. King, assisted by Mr C. T. Lascelles and Mr Davies, was master of ceremonies.
